Warriors Suffer Elimination to No. 11 Missouri Baptist

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (May 16, 2023) – In game two of the NAIA National Championship Opening Round, the Webber International University baseball team matched up against No. 11 Missouri Baptist University on Tuesday afternoon.

Dylan Martin took to the bump for the Warriors (40-17 overall), tossing 3.0 innings and allowing five runs, four of which were earned on seven hits. A combination of four Warriors entered the game in relief including Dawson Young, Xavier Rodriguez, Thomas Lopez Jr., and Blayne Huter.

The Spartans opened the scoring in the second inning after posting three runs on three hits to take a 3-0 lead. They extended that lead even further the following innings with a two-run home run to left field. Webber was held scoreless until the sixth inning when Luis Acevedo delivered a two-run shot of his own over the left field wall, cutting the deficit to three.

Missouri Baptist quickly responded with a big six-run inning in the bottom half, however, to make it 11-2. Angel Diaz brought home another run in the eighth inning with a double that scored Drake Dobyanski, but once again, the Spartans responded. Three more runs for Missouri Baptist in the bottom of the eighth made it an 11-run ballgame.

The Warriors pushed for a late comeback, tallying four runs in the ninth inning but ultimately fell short. Acevedo led the team in hits and RBI's after going 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI's, and two runs scored. Dobyanski led the team in runs scored with three and added a base hit as well. Webber recorded eight hits for the game in total.

The Warriors' postseason run comes to an end as they end the year with an overall record of 40-17. This was Webber's fifth overall opening round and national tournament appearance in program history.
