AVE MARIA, Fla. (April 30, 2023) - The Webber International University baseball team matched up against No. 18 Ave Maria University on the road for its final regular-season series of the year. The Warriors earned the series sweep after defeating the Gyrenes 9-0, 11-8, and 5-3 to improve to a 12-9 record in Sun Conference play.
The Warriors (37-13 overall, 12-9 SUN) took a comfortable victory in game one on Friday thanks to the efficient pitching of
Blayne Huter. Huter tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just five hits and striking out 10 along the way, a season-high for him.
Webber tallied nine runs in total, including a two-run home run by
Angel Diaz in the third inning followed by a three-run home run from
Bryan Morales in the fifth. Diaz ended the game 4-for-5 with three RBI's while Morales added two base knocks and three RBI's as well.
Luis Acevedo contributed with two RBI's of his own.
Mark Link picked up the win in game two as
Jacob Burr earned his second save of the season. It was a high-scoring game as both teams tallied double-digits in the hits column.
The majority of scoring was done in the second frame as Webber tallied five runs on five hits, but Ave Maria responded with four of their own in the bottom half to make it 5-4 entering the third inning. The Warriors added three more runs in the fifth inning thanks to Diaz and Morales both going yard once again. The Gyrenes attempted to battle back but another run in the ninth inning on a
Tommy Diaz RBI-single sealed the victory for Webber.
The third and final game of the series was the closest of them all as the Warriors earned a narrow 5-3 victory.
Dylan Martin tallied his ninth win of the season with Burr adding yet another save. Martin recorded seven strikeouts and allowed just two runs on three hits.
Ave Maria took an early lead in the third inning but Webber later took the lead in the fifth inning on a two-RBI single by A. Diaz followed by a sacrifice fly from Morales. The Warriors added two insurance runs un the sixth on a couple of RBI-singles from both
Drake Dobyanski and A. Diaz.
The Warriors will now head to West Palm Beach, Florida where they will take part in The Sun Conference tournament, beginning on Thursday, May 4th.
