Warriors Run Out of Gas against No. 1 Keiser

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (April 21, 2023) - The Webber International University women's lacrosse team traveled north to the Savannah College of Art & Design to battle No. 1 Keiser University in the semifinal of The Sun Conference tournament. The Warriors battled hard throughout the game, but ultimately, the Seahawks offense switched into high-gear in the fourth quarter to seal the 16-9 victory and advancement to the final.

The Warriors (8-6 overall, 3-4 SUN) recorded more free-position shots and saves, however, the Seahawks (15-0, 7-0) had the advantage when it came to draw controls and forced turnovers.

Keiser got off to a quick start, netting the first goal roughly two minutes into the game and another just a minute and a half later. After taking an early 3-0 lead, the Warriors got themselves on the board through an individual effort by Bryce Gerber. Two more goals just 30 seconds apart from the Seahawks earned them a 5-1 lead with two and a half minutes left in the quarter. Alia Loydd netted the final goal of the quarter to cut the deficit to three.

Back-to-back goals by Keiser to begin the second quarter extended its lead yet again back to five. However, the Warriors responded by scoring three in a row to make it a two-point differential. A goal from Kaitlyn Patterson was followed by Gerber's second of the game just 30 seconds later. Then, Madison Hamilton would score her first of the game to make it 7-5 in favor of the Seahawks. One final goal by Keiser regained the three-goal advantage at the halftime break.

The third quarter was the lowest scoring period as the Seahawks outscored Webber, 2-1. The lone goal for the Warriors coming by way of Ayame Macedo. In the fourth and final quarter, Keiser's offense caught fire as it rattled off six-straight goals to earn a comfortable 10-goal lead. The Warriors battled back over the final three minutes, netting three times through Gerber, Natalie Bartek, and Sydney Britton. Unfortunately, it was too little too late for Webber as its season came to a close.

Gerber led the Warrior-offense with three goals, tallying her 12th hat-trick of the season. The sophomore set single-season program records in goals scored (73), assists (38), and total points (111). The only other assist of the game came through Makayla Senter. Madison Hamilton led the team in draw controls with six, followed by Gerber and Maria Horrell each with three. Bartek tallied a team-high five ground balls while recording her fourth goal of the season. Patterson followed close behind with four ground balls and added two caused turnovers as well. Loydd ended with a team-high four caused turnovers.

The Warriors end the season with an overall record of 8-6, setting a program-best for wins in a single season while reaching the conference tournament for the second year in a row.
