THOMASVILLE, Ga. (April 21, 2023) - The Webber International University baseball team traveled to Georgia for its penultimate conference series of the season against Thomas University on Friday afternoon. The Warriors tallied 12 runs in a seven-inning victory in game one before losing on a walk-off single in game two, 8-7.
Blayne Huter tossed all seven innings for the Warriors (34-12 overall, 9-8 SUN) in the first game, earning a complete-game shutout in which he allowed just five hits and struck out three Night Hawks (20-25, 5-12). The victory earned him his seventh win of the season thus far.
Webber utilized the long-ball to get the offense going as
Angel Diaz delivered a two-run homer in the third inning to open the scoring. The Warriors then added two more in the fourth inning on a couple of solo-home runs by Brody Neveker and
Tyren Milliner. Webber scored three more runs in the fifth inning before yet another two-run blast by A. Diaz the following inning made it 9-0. Then in the seventh inning, the Warriors tacked on three more. Two of which came through a
Luis Acevedo two-RBI single.
A. Diaz ended game one a perfect 3-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI's. Acevedo and Milliner were both 2-for-4 with a run scored as well.
Xavier Rodriguez earned the start in game two, but would split time almost evenly with
Mark Link, as the two pitched 4.0 and 4.1 innings respectively. Rodriguez allowed seven runs on eight hits while Link gave up just one on two.
The Night Hawks got on the board early this time around as they posted two runs in the first inning and another in the third, taking a 3-0 lead. The Warriors responded by taking the lead after a four-run fourth inning that included a two-RBI single by Milliner and a triple from
Drake Dobyanski which scored two more. It did not last long, however, as Thomas quickly retaliated with four runs of its own to retake the lead. A single to center field by Neveker scored two runs in the seventh inning to pull Webber within one. An RBI-groundout in the ninth inning tied the game at seven, but the Night Hawks scored on a single that was followed by a triple in the previous at-bat to steal game two.
Four Warriors had two hits each including Dobyanski, Neveker, Milliner, and
Bryan Morales. All of whom had two RBI's as well, other than Morales. Both
Josh Blackmore and
Richard Rodriguez tallied base knocks while R. Rodriguez added a drawn walk and a run scored.
The series concludes with a single game on Saturday, April 22nd at 1 p.m. The Warriors will then return home to prepare for their next road-trip against No. 18 Ave Maria University the following weekend.
