No. 10 Baseball Takes Series with Two Wins on Senior Day

BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 16, 2023) - The Webber International University baseball team resumed another Sun Conference series with a doubleheader against Florida Memorial University in what was also Senior Day. The Warriors earned two commanding victories to win the series against the Lions as they posted 27 runs between both games.

Xavier Rodriguez was on the mound for the Warriors (32-11 overall, 8-7 SUN) to start game one of the doubleheader as he threw 5.0 innings, allowing no runs and just two hits with three strikeouts. Fellow seniors Casey Lawson and Thomas Lopez Jr. each pitched an inning in relief and both tallied two strikeouts in the 16-0 victory over the Lions (16-17, 6-9).

The Warriors took no time to get the bats going as Angel Diaz blasted a three-run homer to open the scoring in the first inning followed by Drake Dobyanski hitting a solo-shot in the very next at-bat. Then in inning number two, Bryan Morales joined in by firing a two-run blast over the right field wall and extending Webber's lead to 6-0. The game was broken open in the third inning, however, as the Warriors posted nine runs on five hits to take a commanding 15-0 lead. One more run was added in the fifth inning on an RBI-single by Tommy Diaz before the game ended in the seventh inning due to the run-rule.

Five Warriors tallied two hits including A. Diaz who was 2-for-2 with a team-high three RBI's and Ian Kalman who ended 2-for-2 as well with a double and an RBI. Dobyanski also recorded three RBI's and was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Morales, Luis Acevedo, and Richard Rodriguez all tallied two RBI's for the game. In total, Webber racked up 15 hits and 15 RBI's as well as 10 walks.

Dawson Young earned his eighth victory of the season on the mound after tossing six innings in which he allowed three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Mark Link pitched two innings in relief, allowing just one hit before Dawson Young came in to close out the final inning.

Just as in the first game, the Warriors got going early with three runs in the first inning thanks to A. Diaz who delivered a double to right-center field to score the first run of the game. Webber tacked on two more on an error by the Lions. The Warriors added one run in each of the third and fifth innings on a pair of sacrifice flies from Kalman and Brody Neveker, respectfully. An RBI-double by T. Diaz added another in the fifth frame and extended Webber's lead to 6-0.

Florida Memorial's three runs came in the top half of the sixth to cut the deficit in half. However, Blackmore ensured the win for the Warriors after an RBI-single in the seventh and then a bases-clearing double in the eighth inning made it 11-3.

Blackmore was 2-for-4 with a team-high four RBI's while A. Diaz ended a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored, and a pair of stolen bases. Kalman and T. Diaz both contributed with two RBI's as well.

The Warriors will now battle the Conquistadors of Florida National University in a mid-week non-conference matchup on Wednesday, April 19th at 6 p.m. before beginning their next conference series against Thomas University in Georgia on Friday, April 21st.
