Thomas Tosses Shutout as No. 23 Softball Splits

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 7, 2023) - Playing in its second doubleheader in as many days, the Webber International University softball team took on Lawrence Tech University on Tuesday afternoon. The Warriors suffered a big 15-1 defeat in game one but bounced back with a 2-0 victory in game two.

Jenna Chaudoin took to the pitcher's circle for the Warriors (5-9 overall) in game one, but unfortunately struggled in her three innings of work. She was replaced by the freshman, Chloe Rayner who also had a tough time against the Blue Devils' (7-3) lineup as well.

Lawrence Tech scored its first run of the game in the second inning before it added seven more in the third inning to extend its lead to 8-0. Seven more runs in the fourth inning made it 15-0 and left little hope for a comeback attempt by the Warriors. The lone rune for Webber was scored in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to an RBI-double down the left field line by Johnkira Bland.

Freshman Taylor Thomas was lights-out for the duration of her start in game two as she threw a complete game shutout. She gave up just three hits and racked up nine strikeouts en rout to her second victory of the season.

The Warriors took the lead in the third inning after a single to left field by Genesis Aviles scored Hayley Saylor. Kimmie Cheung led off the fifth inning with a single before several wild pitches moved her around the bases and eventually brought her home to double Webber's lead.

Cheung and Saylor both ended the game 1-for-2 with a run scored while Aviles finished 1-for-3 with the game's only RBI.

Webber now has a one-day break before returning to action when it hosts Calumet College of St. Joseph in a doubleheader on Thursday, March 9th at 1 and 3 p.m.
