BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 26, 2023) - The Webber International University women's lacrosse team battled the No. 1 nationally-ranked team in the NAIA, Keiser University, on Saturday aftternoon. The Warriors put up a hard fought battle against the Seahawks and came up just short in the end, 12-10.
The Warriors (5-4 overall, 0-2 SUN) were outshot by the Seahawks (11-0, 3-0) 43-20, but an outstanding performance from Jordyn Davidson in goal limited Keiser as she recorded 19 saves in total.
Webber went down early after two goals by the Seahawks to begin the game. Kaitlyn Patterson netted the first goal for the Warriors on an assist by Bryce Gerber. Following a free position goal by the Seahawks, Gerber responded with her first goal of the game. The Seahawks scored the final goal of the quarter, earning themselves a 4-2 lead.
Gerber netted the first goal of the second quarter and her second of the game less than three minutes into the period. Both teams went back and forth trying to find the back of the cage until the Seahawks scored with 4:49 left on the clock. Gerber took matters into her own hands as she struck back about a minute later, bringing the Warriors back to within one. Keiser put up two more goals, earning a 7-4 lead at the halftime break.
Cheyenne Burton connected with Ayame Macedo on a free position shot to score the first goal of the third quarter. Following Burton's assist, she then turned provider as she found the back of the cage for the Warriors. Gerber ended up tying the game with a free position goal and Madison Hamilton put the Warriors in the lead a few minutes later. Hamilton scored once again just a couple minutes later, extending the lead for the Warriors to 9-7. However, the Seahawks responded with a goal to pull one back in the last six seconds of the quarter. The Warriors struggled to find the cage in the fourth quarter as Keiser scored four goals in a row before Gerber netted the final goal of the game.
Gerber led the Warriors offense with five goals and an assist for a total of six points. She was followed by Hamilton with two goals and an assist and Burton with one each. Nicky Greene led the Warrior defense in caused turnovers with three. Natalie Bartek, Reyanna Troupe, Hamilton and Gerber all added a caused turnover as well. Davidson led the team with three ground balls followed by Bartek with two.
Next up, the Warriors will battle the Bobcats of St. Thomas University on Thursday, March 30th at 1 p.m. on the Warrior Turf Field.
