Warriors Make Light Work of St. Andrews in 3-0 Sweep

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 19, 2023) - The Webber International University men's volleyball team took on its sister-school, St. Andrews University, in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday morning. The Warriors put forth a well-rounded effort in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-18) sweep of the Knights.

The Warriors (7-4 overall, 6-3 AAC) outhit the Knights (10-9, 4-5) with a hitting percentage of .275, compared to .187. Webber tallied nine service aces as a team on top of their 35 kills.

Tied at eight in the first set, the Warriors then scored three-straight thanks to back-to-back kills by Andrea Di Paola followed by a service ace from Peyten Young. Later in the set, Webber utilized a 6-1 run that included two aces by Di Paola to extend their lead to 16-11. Leading 20-16, the Warriors scored four in a row, two of which were kills by Lachlan Diamond and Carson Barnes to hold the set-advantage at 24-16. A kill by Barnes later sealed the set one victory for the Warriors.

Webber took an early 6-4 lead in set number two, although the Knights cam back to tie it up at 7-7. The Warriors then went on a 7-2 run which ended on an unassisted kill by Young to hand them a 14-9 lead. The Knights got back to within three but back-to-back kills by Barnes kick-started an 8-3 run to end the set, putting Webber firmly in the lead at 2-0.

The Warriors once again took an early lead to begin the third set but St. Andrews stormed back to tie the set up at 11-11. Webber then caught fire as it went on a blistering 11-3 run that included three kills from Victor Siqueira and two from Diamond, to jump out to a 22-14 lead.

Barnes led the way offensively with a team-high 10 kills while adding four digs as well. Following close behind was Gunter Perea Quevedo who had eight kills on a .700 hitting percentage. Siqueira ended with six kills and six digs to go along with his team-high three service aces. Diamond and Di Paola both finished with four kills while Diamond contributed defensively with four total blocks on the day. Young added three kills and led the team in both assists with 30 and digs with nine, coming one dig shy of a double-double.

Next up, the Warriors prepare for a mid-week matchup against their Crooked Lake rivals, Warner University on Wednesday, March 22nd at 7 p.m. inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
