No. 23 Softball Gets off the Mark with Sweep of No. 11 Grand View

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 27, 2023) – The Webber International University softball team hosted yet another top-25 opponent in the form of No. 11 Grand View University on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors limited the Vikings offensively in 3-1 and 4-1 victories.

The Warriors (2-4 overall) earned their first two wins of the new season while ending the nine-game win-streak of Grand View (11-3).

Jenna Chaudoin earned her first win of the season as she threw a complete game in which she held the Vikings to just one run on nine hits and tallied six strikeouts.

The Warriors took an early lead after picking up two runs in the first inning. Hayley Saylor drew a walk to bring home the first run of the game before Genesis Aviles scored on a pass ball. The Vikings scored their lone run of the game in the fourth inning, but Aviles added an insurance run with a solo shot to left-center in inning number five.

Aviles was 1-for-1 with a home run, an RBI, two runs scored and two walks. She was followed by Gracie Lopez who went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Brandy Barquin had the only other hit of the game for the Warriors.

Game two saw freshman Taylor Thomas earn her second start of the year. She earned the first win of her collegiate career after tossing a complete game, allowing just one run on four hits with four strikeouts.

Grand View drew first blood in this one after an RBI fielder's choice in the first inning. An RBI-double by Johnkira Bland scored Barquin for Webber's first run of the game. The Warriors added two more that same inning thanks to RBI-singles from both Samantha Proctor and Aubrey Brown. Chaudoin added a fourth run in the fifth inning after a line-drive single down left-field line scored another.

Barquin led the Warriors, going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Proctor was also 2-for-3 with an RBI. Bland, Brown, and Chaudoin all had an RBI each as well. Both Maddie Houtz and Bland finished 1-for-2 with a run scored.

The Warriors now hit the road for the first time this season as they travel to Alabama to take part in the Gulf Coast Invitational. They play a total of four games, three of which will be against top-25 opposition, two on Friday and two on Saturday. Webber takes on the University of Houston-Victoria at 9 a.m. on Friday before facing No. 8 Central Methodist University at 11:15 a.m. On Saturday, the Warriors face No. 25 Saint Xavier University followed by No. 24 University of the Cumberlands.
