WALESKA, Ga. (February 21, 2023) - The Webber International University baseball team took part in the Southeast Rumble this past weekend, hosted by Reinhardt University. The Warriors defeated both Indiana Southeast and Campbellsville University but suffered their first defeat to No. 20 Reinhardt in game two.
Xavier Rodriguez earned the win in the Warriors (12-1 overall)Â tight 6-5 victory over Indiana Southeast (0-7) as he allowed four runs on six hits and tallied five strikeouts.
Blayne Huter tossed three innings of relief before
Dawson Young entered the game to seal the win and earn his fourth save of the season.
Webber struck first thanks to a solo home run by
Kris Allen in the second inning. A four-run top of the fifth earned the Grenadiers a 4-1 lead, but they did not hold the lead for long as the Warriors scored four of their own to regain the lead. A two-RBI double to left field from
Luis Acevedo followed by a single to right field by
Bryan Morales that brought home two more rounded out the inning.
Richard Rodriguez added a much-needed insurance run in the sixth inning after delivering an RBI-single to left field which scored
Josh Blackmore.
Game two was a battle of two high-powered offenses as their were 23 runs scored in total. No. 20 Reinhardt (2-5) held off the Warriors comeback to hand them their first defeat of the season.
Dylan Martin was on the hill to start and completed four innings before being replaced by
Jacob Burr,
Eli Botelle, and
Ivan Martinez-Suarez, who combined to finish the final four innings.
After allowing one run in the first inning and four in the second, Webber trailed 5-0 early on. The Warriors turned things right around after scoring six in the top of the fourth to gain the lead at 6-5. Momentum continued to swing back and forth as the Eagles responded with a two-run home run in the next half-inning to retake the lead. A three-run top of the fifth saw the Warriors take the lead once again but Reinhardt did not back down, scoring one in the sixth and four in the seventh to take a three run lead. The Warriors scored two runs in the ninth inning and came up just short of tying the game yet again after leaving the bases loaded.
Mark Link got the nod in game number three against Campbellsville (3-7) and delivered six shutout innings in which he allowed just four hits and tallied seven strikeouts, earning his third win of the season.
Gabriel Dorsey pitched an inning in his first appearance of the season, recording two strikeouts as well.
A two-RBI single to center field by
Tommy Diaz kicked off the scoring for the Warriors in the second inning. Later that inning, back-to-back RBI-singles from Drake Dobyanksi and Acevedo earned Webber an early 4-0 lead. In the sixth inning, doubles by T. Diaz and Morales added three more runs and made it 8-0 before another run crossed thanks to a wild pitch. The Warriors tacked on four more in the seventh inning to complete the run-rule victory.
The Warriors now return home for a four-game series against Talladega College which will consist of two doubleheaders on Friday, February 24th and Saturday, February 25th.
