Warriors Fall in Heartbreaker to Golden Bears

West Palm Beach, FL – The Webber International Women's Basketball team played the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears Monday afternoon on the second day of the West Palm Beach Classic. The Warriors led for a majority of the game, but were unable to overcome the Golden Bears' attack late, losing 70-62.

Webber started the first quarter hot, jumping out to a 6-0 lead thanks in part to two baskets from Jaiden Ross and another by Alisha Walker. Samantha Pacheco would soon take over, proceeding to score the next eight points for the Warriors. Pachecho hit a jumper, was fouled and sent to the line, hit a three, and hit one more from the charity stripe, with Webber staying ahead 14-5 after her scoring burst. Jaida Burgess was the next Warrior to score, getting a jump shot to fall and hitting one of two from the line to end the first quarter with Webber ahead 17-11 over the Golden Bears.

Burgess picked up right where she left off in the first, getting a quick jumper to fall. She was fouled on her next make, taking her to the line where she sank the and one, making the score 22-14 in favor of the Warriors. Pacheco was sent to the line once again, making both free throws, before cashing in from downtown of a feed from Kori Wimberly. Triniti Lee was also the recipient of a Wimberly pass, as her basket made it 29-14. Pacheco hit two more jump shots before one more free throw from Burgess closed out the Warrior first half with Webber leading 34-27.

Pacheco would continue her scoring outburst, nailing two free throws before Burgess hit another shot, off the assist from Pacheco. Her second assist came on a three-pointer from Wimberly. Shortly after, Pacheco scored yet again to regain the Warriors lead, 43-42. Burgess hit back to back threes to extend the lead, 49-42. Pacheco would find pay dirt once more in the third quarter as the Warriors headed into the fourth up 51-49.

Burgess and Jermaisia Klopsis hit three free throws to help Webber to a slim lead of 54-53. This would be the last lead for the Warriors. Pacheco, Ross, Burgess, and Klopsis would each score two more points as the Warriors were outscored in the fourth quarter, handing Webber the loss, 70-62.

Pacheco led the team with 25 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Burgess dropped 20 points off the bench in her first action of the season, also adding seven rebounds and four steals.

The Warriors will be back in action on Thursday, December 28th when they head to Fort Myers Florida to take on the NCAA Division 1 opponent Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in an exhibition.
