Webber Drops to the Fire in SUNC Matchup

Babson Park, FL – The Webber International football team hosted the Southeastern Fire for some SUNC action on Saturday afternoon. After a tough battle, the Warriors dropped to the Fire in a 17-9 score.

The Warriors came out strong by driving to the Southeastern nine yard line before a fumble gave the possession over to the fire. The Fire managed to get to the Webber 40 yard line, before an interception by Tre' Mobley, giving the Warriors possession with just over four minutes left in the quarter. A drive filled with Taylor Scarbrough rushes brought WIU to the Fire's 30 yardline, before turning the ball over. Tackles by Daeqwan Bailey, Jalen Williams, Antonio Johnson, and Warren Laguerre allowed the Warriors defense to fore a three-and-out to end the quarter scoreless.

After nearly 25 minutes of play, Southeastern claimed the first score with a 16-yard rushing touchdown. After a quick drive, the Warriors were back on defense where they forced another three-and-out in under two minutes. Another fumble would be the demise for the Warriors as it set the Fire up for another touchdown with 16 seconds left in the half. A 78-yard catch and carry by Dj Cloud changed the momentum, making the score 14-6 going into half time.

The Warriors remained consistent by not allowing a point in the third quarter. Southeastern opened the second half with a 20-yard drive before a stop by Bailey and Williams put the Warriors on offense. A Trent Grotjan pass to Julian Cervantes moved Webber forward before a 9-yard rush by Derrick Mincey gave the Warriors a first down. Another 10-yard completion to Antonio Dawson extended the drive for the Warriors. Webber would then turn the ball over on downs, before a forced fumble by Matthew Smiciklas gave the Warriors the ball with five minutes left in the quarter. Webber ended the period with a 30-yard punt from Reagan Harrell

The fourth quarter began with a Southeastern drive that resulted in a punt by the Fire. A 41-yard field goal by Zachary Van Fleet made it a one-score game with over nine minutes left in the game. The Fire answered with a field goal of their own to end the game, making the score 17-9.

The Warriors will be back in action next week as they travel to take on Ave Maria at 7:00 PM.
