Warriors Fall Short at Home Against St. Thomas

Babson Park, FL. - The Webber International women's soccer team faced off against the #17 St. Thomas University Bobcats on Saturday afternoon as the Warriors were coming off a 2-0 victory against Warner University on Wednesday evening. The Warriors showed heart and determination on Saturday afternoon, but the Bobcats offense proved too much for the Warriors to handle as they fell short 3-0.

The Bobcats and Warriors were in a stalemate for the majority of the first half. There was back and forth play in the midfield but neither side was able to get in shooting range. Faith Cullen-Cooper took the first shot of the game for the Warriors in the 13th minute but missed wide, and the Bobcats would get their first chance at goal in the 15th minute off a header by Sarolota Oppelland, but the Warriors defense was there to block it before it reached goal. The Bobcats would continue to push on the offensive side of the field and after back-to-back corner kicks in the 21st minute. The Bobcats would then get a breakaway chance in the 22nd minute from Gabrielle Cimino who took a shot at the bottom left corner and Cameron Laine, the Warrior keeper, was able to deflect the shot which resulted in it hitting the left post and ricocheting back out to another Bobcat player, Alexandra Acevado, who was able to bury it in the back of the net to give the Bobcats a one goal lead. The Bobcats would take five more shots at net in first half, but only one required Laine to make a save to bring her to two saves in the half. The Bobcats took nine total first half shots to only one for the Warriors as they went into halftime leading the Warriors 1-0.

The Bobcats continued their push on offense as they opened up the second half with a goal in the 49th minute by Natalie Woodward to push the Bobcats up 2-0. Then just five minutes later the Bobcats would add to their lead with Woodward scoring her second goal of the game this time assisted by Maria Garcia to make it 3-0. The Bobcats controlled the majority of possession in the second half and the Warriors first second half shot attempt came in the 81st minute when Olof Sigurdardottir was fouled inside the box and earned the Warriors a penalty kick. Deborah Guillen stepped up to the spot for the Warriors, but her shot was spoiled by new second half goalkeeper Amelia Rygh who guessed right and saved the penalty kick for the Bobcats. Guillen would took one more shot attempt in the 89th minute as it hit the crossbar and the final whistle blew as the Warriors fell short to the #17 St. Thomas Bobcats.

The Warriors will stay at home for their next match and battle Florida Memorial University this Wednesday, October 18th at 3:30 PM at the Warrior Grass Field.
