BRUNSWICK, Ga. (January 5, 2022) - The Webber International University men's basketball team played in its second game in as many days, following up a home victory over Bob Jones University with a road-matchup against the College of Coastal Georgia on Thursday night.
K'Shun Stokes and
Eddie Davis combined for 60 points as they led the way to an 89-83 victory for the Warriors.
It was an offensive barrage by both teams as the Warriors (9-5 overall, 3-1 SUN) shot nearly 60 percent from the field while the Mariners (2-11, 0-6) managed 52.5 percent. Webber uncharacteristically struggled from beyond the arc but dominated down low with 42 total points in the paint and got to the line a massive 30 times, converting 24 free throws.
Following the opening tip, the Warriors were off to a very slow start as the Mariners burst out to a quick 10-0 lead after just the first two and a half minutes. Coastal Georgia kept its foot on the gas and increased its lead to 19-4 after two more minutes. Webber slowly worked its way into the game but the Mariners kept pace, eventually leading by as many as 17 at 39-22 with 5:14 left in the half. A jumper by Davis followed by two successful free throws from Stokes on the following possession kick-started a 19-5 run by the Warriors over the final five minutes of the half. 18 of those final 19 points came from either Davis or Stokes.
A 9-5 run by the Mariners to open the second half, saw them extend their lead to nine after the first three minutes and 20 seconds. Coastal Georgia held its nine-point lead over the next two minutes before both teams began to go cold offensively. Baskets were few and far between for about five minutes or so, but the Warriors slowly but surely began to cut into the deficit. Two layups by Davis roughly a minute apart, pulled Webber back within one point at 64-63 with six and a half minutes to go.
Trailing 66-64, a three-pointer from Davis earned the Warriors their first lead of the game with just over five minutes left. A successful jumper from the Mariners saw them take the lead yet again but another layup from Davis on the ensuing possession regained the lead for Webber. The Warriors never relinquished their lead from that point on as they extended their advantage to as many as 10, through the remainder of the game.
The Warriors were led in scoring by Stokes with 32, tallying his third game of the season with 30 points or more. He shot 71.4 percent on the night and converted a season-high 12 free throws out of 12. Davis recorded career-highs in points with 28 and field goals in a game with 11 while shooting 73.3 percent from the floor. The pair were followed by
Tiyon Martin with 10 points and
Jordan Golden with nine. Golden and Stoked tied for a team-high six rebounds while Stokes, Davis, and Martin all led the team with three assists each.
Defensively, Martin led the team with three steals followed by Stokes with two. Davis and Golden each added a block to their credit as well.
Webber now returns home for its third game of the week, a tough matchup against Thomas University on Saturday, January 7th at 4 p.m. The Nighthawks currently sit atop the Sun Conference standings with a 12-2 record overall and a flawless 6-0 record in conference.
