Men's Basketball Suffers Road-Loss to St. Thomas

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (January 15, 2023) - The Webber International University men's basketball team's win streak came to an end on Saturday afternoon as it fell to the Bobcats of St. Thomas University, 83-56.

The Warriors (12-6 overall, 6-2 SUN) were held to their lowest scoring-output of the season as they mustered just 56 points on 36.4 percent shooting in total and 29.4 percent from deep. St. Thomas (16-4, 5-3) capitalized on almost every single turnover it forced as it recorded 22 points off turnovers.

Coming off of a three-game home-stand, the Warriors were slow to adjust in the first half and it showed as the Bobcats went on a 16-4 run over the first five minutes of the game. Webber slowly found its footing offensively, but St. Thomas was still able to increase its advantage to as many as 16 points with just over a minute remaining in the half. The Bobcats held a comfortable 14-point lead heading into the second half.

Trailing 49-32 after the first three minutes of the second half, Webber then went on a 12-2 run over the next four and a half minutes to cut the deficit to single digits at just seven. That is as close as the Warriors came, however, as they were unable to close the gap. St. Thomas took the wind out of Webber's sails as it went on to lead by as many as 27 points en route to victory.

"It was a tough road-loss today", said Head Coach Gabriel Rutledge. "We were missing our energy in warm-ups and it contributed to our slow start. Playing six games in 11 days isn't easy and we didn't play our best basketball today. Offensively, we just weren't hitting shots and we did a very poor job of handling the adversity and being the more physical team on the defensive end. St. Thomas did a good job of pressuring our guards and limiting us to one shot. We did not play at the level we have before and what I know we're capable of. We have to take responsibility, watch the film, learn, get tougher, and move on to the next game. Go Warriors."

The Warriors were led by Eddie Davis who finished with 17 points on 54.5 percent shooting, while adding the only block for Webber. K'Shun Stokes tallied 15 points and led the team in both rebounds (8) and assists (3). He was followed by Orri Hilmarsson with seven points and Jordan Golden and Chinecherem Anukaenyi each with four. Golden added five rebounds and two assists while Anukaenyi recorded four rebounds as well.

Webber will now return home to take on its Crook Lake rival, Warner University, on Thursday, January 19th at 7:30 p.m. The Warriors will be back on the road just two days after that as they travel for a matchup against Ave Maria University on Saturday at 4 p.m.
