No. 25 Baseball wins series-finale, prepares for Sun Conference tournament

BABSON PARK, Fla. (May 3, 2022) – The Webber International University baseball team concluded its regular season this past weekend with a 2-1 series win over Thomas University. The Warriors would pick up two big wins in games one and three while dropping a tight game two of the series.

Prior to Friday's series-opening game, the Webber baseball team dedicated the naming of its field to the current Director of Athletics and past Head Baseball Coach, Brad Niethammer. Coach Niethammer was the first head coach of the Webber College baseball program in 1993 and spent 26 years in charge, amassing over 750 wins. The team also retired Coach Niethammer's number 17, which he wore during his tenure.

The Warriors (37-17 overall, 12-12 SUN) end the season fifth in the conference standings behind No. 1 Southeastern, No. 8 St. Thomas, No. 16 Warner, and No. 19 Keiser.

Webber would cruise to a game one victory on Friday afternoon after a five-run bottom of the eighth would end the game early, giving the Warriors a 13-3 victory. Dylan Martin would start on the mound in game one, earning his 10th win of the season after giving up just three runs on eight hits and picking up five strikeouts through seven innings. Rey Rodriguez would come in to see out the final inning, earning a strikeout in the process.

Game two would prove to be much more low-scoring as neither team would score until the eighth inning. Xavier Rodriguez would start for the Warriors, throwing 6.2 innings in which he allowed no runs on six hits and punched out nine before Dawson Young would finish off the last 2.1 innings. Young would allow two runs on three hits and struck out four.

The two teams would trade solo home runs in the eighth inning thanks to a shot by Bryan Eusebio that leveled it at 1-1. A sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth would bring home another run for the Night Hawks, earning them the game two victory.

Thomas would hold a 6-5 lead in the middle of the fourth inning of game three before the Warriors would score 11 unanswered runs over the next three innings to take a commanding 16-6 lead. The Night Hawks would pick up one more run in the seventh but Webber would take a 16-7 victory to win the series.

Offensively, the Warriors were led by Eusebio who finished the weekend 6-for-13 (.462) with a home run, a triple, two doubles, four RBI's and six runs scored. He was followed by Tyren Milliner who ended the series 4-for-11 (.364) with a home run, five runs scored and three RBI's and Drake Dobyanski who was 3-for-10 (.300) with a double and three runs scored. Kenny Rodriguez was 3-for-12 with two home runs and five RBI's.

The Warriors now shift to the postseason in preparation for the Sun Conference Tournament which will begin on Thursday, May 5th, and run through Sunday, May 8th.
