Baseball splits opening doubleheader against USCB

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (April 8, 2022) - The Webber International University baseball team traveled to South Carolina to take on University of South Carolina Beaufort, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Warriors fell to the Sand Sharks in game one after a walk-off 6-5 defeat before dominating game two, 12-2, in seven innings.

Xavier Rodriguez would start on the mound for the Warriors (31-12 overall, 6-7 SUN), throwing six innings and allowing two runs on five hits while tallying five strikeouts along the way. Austin Dreher, Praxie Vigil, and Thomas Lopez Jr. would combine to pitch the remaining 2.2 innings.

The game would remain scoreless until the fourth inning where the Warriors would pick up three runs. First, on a two-RBI single from Kenny Rodriguez followed by a sacrifice fly by Drake Dobyanski. K. Rodriguez would be the source of another run in the fifth inning after launching a solo home run to right center field. The Sand Sharks (20-20, 7-10) would score two runs in the bottom of the sixth and another in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to one run. An RBI single from Dobyanski in the top of the ninth would extend the Warrior-lead to two runs. However, in the bottom of the ninth, USCB would score three runs, two of which came on RBI singles to earn the walk-off victory.

The Warriors were led by K. Rodriguez who was 2-for-5 with a triple, a home run, an RBI, and a run scored followed by Dobyanski who ended 2-for-4 with two RBI's. Richard Rodriguez also collected two RBI's while going 1-for-3 with a walk. Tyren Milliner was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

The starting pitcher for the Warriors in game two would be Dylan Martin. He would pitch all seven innings, striking out eight batters and allowing just two runs on five hits.

Dobyanski would keep his bat hot going into the second game as he would get the Warriors on the board with a two-RBI single up the middle in the top of the second. Webber would bust the game open in the third inning after tacking on six more runs to extend its lead to 8-0. A double from Angel Diaz would bring home two runs and that would be followed up by an RBI single from Milliner. USCB would walk home two more runs before a sacrifice fly from Luis Acevedo would round out the third inning. In inning number four, back-to-back RBI singles from Tommy Diaz and Bryan Eusebio would extend the Warriors lead to 10-0. The fifth inning would see a double down the left field line from Christian Martin that would score Dobyanski, followed by a sacrifice fly to right field by A. Diaz to make it 12-0. The Sand Sharks would pick up two runs in the bottom of the sixth but it would be too little too late as the game would end in seven innings.

In game two, Eusebio would lead the Warriors after ending 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored followed by Dobyanski who was 3-for-3 with three RBI's and a run scored. A. Diaz would tie with Dobyanski to lead the team with three RBI's. C. Martin would end the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored followed by T. Diaz who also had two hits after going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The Warriors play the final game of the three-game series against USCB tomorrow, April 9, at 12 p.m. Webber will then travel to Lake Wales, Florida to face its Crooked Lake rivals, the No 15 Warner University Royals. That series will begin on Thursday, April 14, at 6 p.m.
