No. 2 Cumberlands too much for Warriors in first round of MSC tournament

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (April 22, 2022) - The Webber International University women's lacrosse team traveled to No. 2 University of the Cumberlands for the opening round of the Mid-South Conference tournament on Thursday morning. The Patriots' offense would prove to be too much to handle for the Warriors as they suffered a 23-4 defeat, eliminating them from the conference tournament.

The Warriors (6-12 overall) were heavily outshot by the Patriots (17-1) 46-11 in total for the game. Cumberlands was effective on the defensive end as well, forcing Webber into 26 turnovers.

Cumberlands started the game strong, scoring eight goals in just the first quarter while holding the Warriors scoreless. The Patriots would score three more times to start the second quarter, earning themselves an 11-0 lead with just under eight minutes remaining in the half. The Warriors would finally get on the board, scoring two goals roughly a minute and a half apart. The first goal came from Samantha Esher followed by a goal from Courtnie Couch, both assisted by Bryce Gerber. Webber would trail by 10 at the halftime break.

The Warriors would score just two more goals in the game after being outscored 6-1 in the third quarter and 5-1 in the fourth quarter. Esher would score a solo-goal in the third quarter while the final score came via a man-up goal from Kaitlyn Patterson assisted by Ayame Macedo.

Esher would lead the Warriors with five total shots and two goals in the game. Gerber would lead the team in assists with two while adding a ground ball and a caused turnover as well. Reyanna Troupe and Jordyn Davidson would both lead the team in ground balls with three each, followed by Alexia Allen with two. Davidson would gather 14 saves in her 60 minutes in the cage.

The Warriors end the season with an overall record of 6-12 and finished 1-5 in the Mid-South Conference. Webber faced seven teams ranked in the national top-10 polls and end the season receiving votes.
