Friend steals home to earn Warriors 1-0 win over No. 10 Coastal Georgia

BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 15, 2022) - The Webber International University softball team opened its Sun Conference series against No. 10 College of Coastal Georgia with a tight 1-0 victory on Friday afternoon.

It was a showdown between two top pitchers in the Sun Conference as there were just five hits between both teams in total for the game. Starting on the mound for the Warriors (32-14 overall, 14-5 SUN) would be sophomore Kayla Swinson, making her 23rd appearance of the season. She would throw a complete game shutout after allowing no runs and just three hits while tallying four strikeouts. The win for Swinson improves her record on the season to 19-2. She now leads the Sun Conference in ERA (0.59), innings pitched (143.1), strikeouts (129) and wins (19).

The game would prove to be a pitching duel as both teams would remain hitless until the Mariners would get their first hit in the top of the fourth inning. The Warriors would earn their first hit an inning later after a single to center field from Krista Hoyt. In the bottom of inning number six, Kelsea Friend would draw a walk to lead off the inning. Nicole Gutierrez would single down the left field line to put runners on first and second with nobody out. After a pop-out, both runners would advance on an error by the Mariners' catcher. Off the back of the error, Friend would catch the Coastal Georgia defense off guard by stealing home for the first and only run of the game.

The Warriors were led by Gutierrez and Hoyt who both ended 1-for-2 with the only two base hits of the game for Webber, while Friend scored the only run.

The series continues with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16, at 12 and 2 p.m. The Warriors will then travel to Florida National University for its final two non-conference games of the year in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 20, at 3 and 5 p.m.
