WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 7, 2022) - Following a tight loss to No. 1 Reinhardt University, the Webber International University men's lacrosse team matched up against Lawrence Tech University in a non-conference neutral game at Keiser University on Monday afternoon. The Warriors would hold off the Blue Devils to earn the 13-10 victory.
The Warriors (6-3 overall) fired off just 17 total shots in the game, but were extremely efficient with those shots as 13 of them found the back of the net. The Blue Devils rattled off 47 shots, only 28 of which were on target. Lawrence Tech was able to scoop up 41 ground balls compared to Webber's 23, however, the Warriors had the slight edge from the spot, winning 14 of the 26 total face offs.
Webber would strike first after a solo goal from
Chase Jackson would get the Warriors on the board. Less than a minute later, Jackson would turn provider, assisting a goal to
Alexander Kew to earn an early 2-0 lead. Lawrence Tech would respond by scoring two goals in two minutes towards the end of the quarter to tie the game, but a goal from
Alex West assisted by
Blake Nelson would regain the advantage for the Warriors heading into the second quarter. Kew would double the Warrior-lead with just under nine minutes remaining in the half. Lawrence Tech would score a minute and a half later and Webber would respond yet again with a goal from Jackson, assisted by
Dillon Ziemba. The Blue Devils would score twice to end the half and tie it up at 5-5 heading into the break.
The third quarter would be all Warriors as they would outscore their opponents 4-0 thanks to goals from
Christian Tapia, Kew, and two goals from
Alex West in less than a minute to end the quarter. Webber would hold a 9-5 lead heading into the final quarter of play. Keeping the momentum going, Kew would score twice in two minutes to start the fourth quarter, gifting the Warriors an 11-5 lead. Lawrence Tech would then score two-straight but it would be responded by the Warriors with back-to-back goals of their own from Nelson and Jackson. The Blue Devils would score the final three goals of the game to reduce the deficit, but would run out of time as Webber would earn the 13-10 victory.
Offensively, the Warriors were led by Kew who racked up five goals and an assist for a game-high six points. Jackson followed closely behind with five points of his own on three goals and two assists. West earned his second hat-trick of the season while Nelson had one goal and two assists for a total of three points.
Hunter Scott was 12-of-20 from the spot while leading the team in ground balls with seven followed by
Dane Fasano with three.
Jordan Elam and
Steven Landsman would both lead the team in caused turnovers with two each. Four different goalies combined for a total of 18 saves in the game, most of which came from
Ayden Kulick who made 11 saves in his 29 minutes in goal.
The Warriors now return to conference-action as they travel to Point University to take on the Sky Hawks on Friday, March 11, at 1 p.m. Webber will then have a week-long break before traveling to Michigan to face three non-conference opponents in just four days.
