BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 2, 2022) - Following two-straight victories, the Webber International University women's lacrosse team hosted Division-III opposition in the form of Cabrini University, resulting in a 19-5 defeat for the Warriors on home turf.
The Warriors (2-4 overall) were heavily outshot, 38-9, by the Cavaliers (2-0) in total for the game. Webber was forced into a number of turnovers, thanks to the pressure of the Cabrini-defense.
The Cavaliers would start the game strong, scoring three goals in the first three minutes of the game. Just over four minutes into the game, the Warriors would score their first goal via
Samantha Esher, assisted by
Natalie Baumgarten. Two minutes later, Cabrini would score another to extend the lead to 4-1. Just 22 seconds later,
Maria Horrell would find the back of the net off of an assist from Esher to bring it back within two at 4-2. The Cavaliers would score three more goals over the final five minutes of the first quarter to take a commanding 7-2 lead. Following another goal from Cabrini to start the second quarter, the Warriors would pick up their third of the game thanks to a man-up goal from Esher. Cabrini would score six times over the next seven and a half minutes to extend the lead to 11 before yet another goal from Esher, unassisted, with five seconds remaining in the half.
The Warriors would be held scoreless in the third quarter with Cabrini adding just one goal, heading into the fourth quarter ahead 15-4. The Cavaliers would score four more throughout the fourth quarter before the fifth and final goal from the Warriors, a solo-goal from
Lauren Dombroski.
Offensively, the Warriors were led by Esher who finished with three goals and an assist for a total of four points. She converted two of her three free position shots and added a caused turnover. Horrell and Dombroski each added a goal while Baumgarten finished with an assist.
Alexia Allen led the team with a total of five ground balls and added two draw controls and a caused turnover as well.
Raven Kearse ended the game with two ground balls and a caused turnover while
Natalie Bartek finished with one ground ball, one caused turnover, and two draw controls.
Next up, Webber hits the road as it travels to Indianapolis, Indiana to face Marian University on Saturday, March 5, at 1 p.m. Two days later, the team will then travel to Thomas More University for a matchup against the Saints on Monday, March 7, at 12 p.m.
