BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 13, 2022) - The Webber International University softball extended its win streak to 12 games on Sunday afternoon after defeating the Indiana Tech Warriors twice in a doubleheader. Webber was victorious in game one 3-0, before winning again in game two, 3-1.
Kayla Swinson would be lights out on the mound for the Warriors (17-7 overall) in game one, pitching a complete game one-hitter. She would allow zero runs on just the one hit and struck out four in her seven innings of action.
It would be a tight game between the two teams as it would remain scoreless until Webber would get on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Paysee Crow would pinch hit and send a ball into right center field for a double.
Kelsea Friend would then hit a bunt single to put two runners on base. Then,
Mary-Margaret Maggard would clear the bases with a two-RBI triple to right field. A sacrifice-fly from
Abigail Thompson in the next at-bat would give Webber a 3-0 lead.
Maggard would lead Webber offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, two RBI's and a run scored. Crow was 1-for-1 with a double while
Maddie Houtz was 1-for-2 with a walk and Friend was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Starting on the mound for Webber in game two would be
Morgan Mills. She would throw a complete game, allowing just one run on six hits and tallying six strikeouts. Mills would earn her third win of the season, making her 3-3 on the year.
Webber would draw first blood in the bottom of inning number three. After back-to-back singles from Hoyt and Friend, Maggard would lay down a bunt single to the pitcher. A wild throw over to first base from the pitcher would cause the ball to end up in right field, allowing all runners to advance home, giving Webber a 3-0 lead. Indiana Tech (4-8) would score their only run of the game in the top of the fourth on an RBI-single. However, Webber was able to hold on and see out the victory in game two.
"I am so proud of the continued growth and fight in this team," spoke Head Coach
Kristy Burton. "Kayla (Swinson) and Morgan (Mills) did a great job limiting the offensive attack of Indiana Tech. Offensively, we continue to hit as a team and find ways to edge out our opponents stretching, our winning streak to 12 games. It was nice to be back on our home turf and we look forward to continued success this upcoming week. Go Warriors."
Up next, the Warriors will host Cottey College in a doubleheader on Thursday, March 17, at 1 and 3 p.m. before returning to Sun Conference action in a three-game series against Thomas University that will begin on Friday, March 18.
