BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 28, 2022) - The Webber International University men's volleyball team hosted the Knights of St. Andrews University on Saturday evening. After falling behind 2-0, the Warriors fought back to 2-2 but ultimately came up short 3-2 (25-19, 25-22, 18-25, 21-25, 15-13).
Both teams finished with a total of 52 kills in the match, however, the Warriors (11-5 overall, 6-2 SUN) had a hitting percentage of .220 compared to the .138 percent of the Knights (10-3, 3-2).
St. Andrews would jump out to an early lead in the first set with the Warriors battling back to within two late in the set at 20-18. However, the Knights would go on a 5-1 run to end the first set 25-19 and take a 1-0 lead. Webber would find itself ahead at 11-8 roughly halfway through the second set, but a 6-3 run from St. Andrews would level the game at 14-14. After more back-and-forth, the Warriors would hold a 20-19 lead before another 6-2 run from the Knights would give them the 2-0 lead.
The Warriors would not back down, as in the third set, after being tied at 10, they would begin to pull away. Led by
Chris Ludwig who would finish with seven kills in the third set alone, Webber would pull one back and win the set 25-18. The fourth set would see momentum swings in both directions as the two teams would be still be tied late in the set at 20-20. A 5-1 run from the Warriors to end the set would make it 2-2, forcing a fifth set after being down 2-0.
Webber would score the first point of the final set on an attack error by the Knights, but the opposition would then score five-straight to jump out to an early 5-1 lead. The Warriors would try to chip away at the lead but St. Andrews would do well to keep them at arms length. The Knights would hold match point at 14-9, however, Webber would then pull it back to within one at 14-13, but an attack error from the Warriors would end the match.
Ludwig ended the match with a double-double after leading the team in both kills with 18 and digs with 12.
Tinaishe Ndavazocheva followed closely behind with 14 kills on .333 hitting and added eight digs to his credit while
Gunter Perea Quevedo had eight kills, six digs and four total blocks.
Lachlan Diamond finished with six kills and led the team in total blocks with five.
Wesley Blazek came one dig away from his first double-double of the season after a season-high 43 assists and nine digs in the match.
Next up, the Warriors host the Life University Running Eagles on Friday, March 4, at 7 p.m. before matching up against Reinhardt University the very next day at 1 p.m.
