LAURINBURG, N.C. (February 25, 2022) - The Webber International University men's lacrosse team earned its first conference victory of the season on the road over the Knights of St. Andrews University, 11-7.
The game was even in terms of opportunities as both teams would have a total of 33 shots in total. The two sides would have a similar number of saves and turnovers as well, however, the Warriors (4-2 overall, 1-1 AAC) would have the edge in face offs, 14-8, over St. Andrews (2-1, 2-1).
The Warriors would strike first less than three minutes into the game after a man-up goal from
Houston Finlayson, assisted by
Chase Jackson. Six minutes later, the Knights would respond with a man-up goal of their own. Webber would score two goals over the final five minutes of the first quarter, first on a solo goal from Jackson followed by a goal from sophomore
Christian Tapia on an assist from
Alexander Kew. The Warriors would hold a 3-1 lead heading into the second quarter.
There would be just one goal from either side in the second quarter. First, a goal from
Jonathan Schrager would extend the Warrior lead to three before a goal from St. Andrews with three minutes remaining in the half would make it a two-score game yet again at 4-2.
Webber would continue to put on the offensive pressure in the second half after another goal from Finlayson. Five minutes later,
Blake Nelson would register his sixth goal of the season giving the Warriors a 6-2 lead. St. Andrews would score twice in the third quarter, but the Warriors would always have an answer. Another goal from Tapia would be followed by three-straight goals from Jackson to end the third quarter and earn Webber a commanding 10-4 lead.
The Knights would outscore the Warriors in the fourth quarter 3-1, with the lone goal coming from Tapia, earning himself his first hat-trick of the season.
The Warriors were led by Jackson who finished with seven points on four goals and three assists. He also added four ground balls and two caused turnovers on the defensive end. Tapia ended with three goals and three points followed by Finlayson with two goals and Nelson with a goal and an assist to his credit.
Hunter Scott led the Warriors with six ground balls while also winning 13 of his 21 face offs. He was followed by
Dillon Ziemba with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Alex Cordero was solid in goal for the Warriors making 11 saves in total on the day.
Webber will now have a one-day break before they travel to Savannah, Georgia to face SCAD-Savannah on Sunday, February 27, at 1 p.m.
