BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 10, 2022) - Following yesterday's sweep of Mount Mercy University, the Webber International University softball team hosted the No. 15 Freed-Hardeman University Lions in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. Facing top-25 opposition for the first time this season, the Warriors were kept scoreless in both games, first 2-0 and then 5-0 in game two.
The starting pitcher for the Warriors (3-3 overall) in game one was sophomore
Kayla Swinson. Swinson would pitch well, throwing a complete game and giving up just two runs on three hits and striking out six. Just three hits for both teams in what was a tight game, however, the Lions (2-0) were able to string a couple of hits together in the top of the fourth inning to gain a 2-0 advantage.
Kelsea Friend had two of the Warriors' three hits in the game with a double to left field in the bottom of the fourth and a single in the sixth inning.
Krista Hoyt had the only other base hit for Webber with a single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh. Friend led the team on the base paths, collecting two stolen bases as well. The Warriors struggled to get runners across the plate, leaving six runners on base throughout the game.
Morgan Mills would start on the mound for Webber in game number two. The Lions would strike first in the third inning after a two-RBI double would put them out in front. A two-out RBI single in the fourth inning would increase Freed-Hardeman's lead to three runs. The Lions would add two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning on a two-RBI triple, extending the lead to 5-0.
Leading the Warriors offensively in game two was
Witney Bones who went 2-2 with a double. Hoyt and
Abigail Thompson both went 1-2 while Mills would finish 1-3. Webber left two runners on base in the second and seventh innings and left seven on base in total for the game. Mills pitched all seven innings earning the complete game and giving up five runs, only three of which were earned, on seven hits, striking out four and walking one.
The Warriors now have a one-day break before hosting their third doubleheader in four days, as they face Bryan College on Saturday, February 12th, at 12 and 2 p.m. on
Nancy Nichols Field.
