BABSON PARK, Fla. (December 31, 2022) – The Webber International University women's basketball team played in its final game of 2022 on New Year's Eve against No. 6 Marian University. With a limited squad, the Warriors were unable to keep up with the offensive firepower of the Knights in a 72-37 defeat.
As was the day before, the Warriors (2-11 overall) were limited in their rotation despite having
Samantha Pacheco back in the lineup. The Knights (14-1) were on fire offensively as they shot 47.6 percent from the field en route to their ninth-straight victory.
It was the Warriors that scored the first bucket just over a minute into the game but an 11-2 run by the Knights over the next three and a half minutes earned them a seven-point advantage at 11-4. Marian extended its lead to double digits by the end of the first quarter of action.
Webber struggled immensely in the second quarter as it was held to just a single basket and a shooting percentage of just 6.3 percent. The Knights, however, had their highest scoring quarter of the game, racking up 23 points on 50 percent shooting as they increased their lead to 31 at halftime.
The Warriors improved slightly on the offensive end as they were able to tally nine points, four of which came through
Rushell Jacob. It was more of the same, unfortunately, for Webber as Marian steadily increased its lead to as many as 41.
The fourth and final quarter was the best for the Warriors offensively as they managed to score 19 on a much improved 46.2 percent shooting from the floor. It was also the only quarter in which Webber managed to outscore the Knights.
Pacheco returned to the lineup and posted a team-high 12 points as well as three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. She was followed by Jacob with eight points and two steals.
Jaida Burgess and
Triniti Lee both ended with five points each. Lee led the team with six rebounds followed by Burgess with five.
Webber now has just a one-day break before hosting the University of Fort Lauderdale on Monday, January 2nd at 4 p.m. in what will be its final non-conference matchup of the season. The Warriors will then travel to the College of Coastal Georgia for their first matchup against the Mariners on Thursday, January 5th at 5:30 p.m.
