LAKE WALES, Fla. (November 6, 2022) - The Webber International University women's basketball team faced the University of Mobile Rams in what was the second and final game of the SSAC/SUN Conference Challenge on Saturday afternoon. A rough third quarter for the Warriors led to a 63-45 defeat to the Rams in their second game of the new season.
The Warriors' (0-2 overall) offensive woes continued as they shot just 29.8 percent from the field for the game, while th Rams (2-3) shot 45.6 percent.
Webber started off slow offensively in the first quarter, but good defense kept the game close. The Warriors shot only 16.7 percent in the first quarter but forced Mobile into five turnovers, trailing by just three at 11-8 heading into the second quarter.
The Warriors' scoring improved in the second quarter, led by
Rushell Jacob with six. Despite shooting a much improved 43.8 percent, the Rams matched it and not only held their advantage over Webber, but increased it by two. The Warriors trailed 28-23 at the halftime break.\
The Rams came hot out of the break, going on a 13-0 run over the first five minutes of the quarter. Webber did not get its first points of the new half until almost five minutes in. Mobile continued to build upon its lead as quarter progressed, leading by as many as 20 at 45-25. The Warriors had their work cut out for them as they trailed by 17 to begin the final quarter of play.
Webber began chipping away at the deficit as they went on an 11-5 run over the first six minutes of the quarter, cutting the lead to 11 points. That is as close as they got, however, as the Rams did enough to stave off the comeback attempt and seal the win.
Leading the way offensively was Jacob who ended with 14 points on 54.5 percent shooting while adding three rebounds and a block. She was followed by
Jaida Burgess with 11 points and
Alexandria Lemmon with six.
Dasia Wandick led the team with eight total rebounds followed by
Samantha Pacheco with six and Burgess with four. Burgess also led the team in assists with four while Pacheco finished with a team-high four steals.
The Warriors now have just a one day break before traveling to Melbourne, Florida to take on Division-II Florida Tech on Monday, November 7th at 7 p.m. Webber then returns home for its home and conference-opener against Ave Maria University on Thursday, November 10th at 5:30 p.m.
