Football Defeats Florida Memorial on Homecoming Weekend, 31-14

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 22, 2022) - The Webber International University football team hosted the Florida Memorial University Lions for homecoming weekend on Saturday afternoon on the Warriors Turf Field. The Warriors led from start to finish as they earned their fourth victory of the season, 31-14.

The Warriors (4-2 overall, 2-1 SUN) accrued 399 yards of total offense and forced the Lions (2-5, 0-3) into three turnovers.

Webber received the opening kickoff and methodically moved the ball down the field with a 15-play, 60-yard drive that lasted just over six and a half minutes. The Warriors would get stopped on third-and-goal and a 19-yard field goal from Riley Robbins handed them an early 3-0 lead. After forcing Florida Memorial into a three-and-out on its first offensive possession, the Warriors got the ball back and began their next drive from their own 15 yard line.

The drive began with back-to-back rushes from Terry Weems Jr. for 13 and 25 yards. A 15-yard pass from Cody Braden to Antonio Dawson on third-and-seven kept the drive alive and took Webber down to the Lions' 29 yard line. The Warriors got down to the one yard line where Roshaun Dusley would power his way into the endzone to exten the lead to 10 following the point-after-attempt.

With four minutes remaining in the second quarter, the Warriors blocked a 34-yard field goal attempt by the Lions to keep them off the scoreboard. On the following drive, Braden connected with Frederick Curry Jr. over the middle for a 39-yard gain. Facing a fourth-and-two on the FMU 27 yard line, Webber went for it and got the first down as Braden hit Dashaun Young for a 19-yard completion. The Warriors handed it off to Tremon Bright twice in a row to punch it into the endzone and extend the lead to 17.

Florida Memorial came out of the halftime break with some offensive momentum as they drove down and scored on an 11-yard touchdown pass, capping a six-play, 45 yard drive to reduce the deficit to 10 yet again. Webber went three-and-out with its first offensive possession of the second half and were forced to punt. The Lions worked their way to the Warrior 30-yard line before breaking off a 30-yard touchdown rush on first-and-10. After scoring on back-to-back possessions, the lead was now just three points.

The momentum shifted back to the Warriors in the fourth quarter as an 18-yard pass from Braden to Curry Jr. followed by a 24-yard quarterback keeper out them on the Lions' 10-yard line. Following a one-yard loss, Braden found Kenneth Davis wide open on a slant over the middle for a touchdown to make it a two possession ball game. With Florida Memorial's next possession, a pass deep down the sideline was intercepted by senior Trent Peacock and returned 37 yards. Braden then threw his second touchdown pass of the game, this time on a fade route to freshman wide receiver Logan Heath for the first touchdown of his collegiate career. The 17-point lead was restored and the Warriors earned win number four on the season.

Braden led the team offensively, completing 16 of his 22 passing attempts for 214 yards and two touchdowns. Webber finished with 185 yards on the ground, led by Bright and Weems Jr. each with 55 yards followed by Braden with 38. Curry Jr. led the Warriors with five receptions for 75 yards while Heath ended with 44 yards and a touchdown on three catches.

Defensively, senior Devonte Harris was all over the field recording seven total tackles, two of which were for a loss, and adding two pass breakups. He was followed by Jaren Muse with six tackles. Three Warriors ended with five total tackles including Marquavion Jeter, Takari Plummer, and Tyron Washington. Peacock and Warren Laguerre each had an interception and Rocky O'Rourke forced a fumble to go with his four tackles.

Next up, Webber has its final non-conference matchup of the season as it hosts Virginia University of Lynchburg on Saturday, October 29th at 1:30 p.m. The Warriors then play back-to-back games against nationally ranked opponents as they face No. 22 St. Thomas University on the road before returning home to face No. 19 Keiser University the following week.
