Women's Volleyball Drops Road Matchup to Gyrenes

AVE MARIA, Fla. (October 17, 2022) - The Webber International University women's volleyball team faced the Ave Maria University Gyrenes for the second time this season on Saturday afternoon, this time on the road. The Warriors struggled offensively as the Gyrenes took the victory, 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-18).

Ave Maria (14-3 overall, 6-1 SUN) displayed its offensive prowess, posting an impressive .358 hitting percentage for the match. The Warriors (12-9, 2-4) struggled to get anything going offensively as they hit just .068 percent.

The Gyrenes jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the first set and never looked back. They went on multiple 3-0 runs over the course of the set and kept Webber from stringing together any points in order to gather some offensive momentum. AMU went on to win the first set handedly 25-16. The Warriors fell behind early yet again in set number two, 13-6. Webber then scored on back-to-back kills by Savannah Wilhite to get within five, but that is as close as it would get as the Gyrenes ran away with it, winning the set 25-11. The Warriors were much more competitive to begin the third set as they trailed by just one at 9-8. Ave Maria then went on an 8-1 run to take a commanding 17-9 lead. An 8-3 run by Webber pulled it back within three at 20-17, but a 5-1 run from AMU saw it complete the sweep on its home court.

The Warriors were led by Cintia Lorena with seven kills followed by Bailey Sikkema with five and Wilhite with four. Amanda Vega led the way with 10 assists while Bailey Berger finished with a team-high 10 digs. Vega tallied eight digs and Paysee Crow added seven digs and five assists. Teodora Ranitovic ended the match leading the team with three total blocks.

Next up, the Warriors travel to their Crooked Lake rivals, Warner University, for their first matchup of the season on Monday, October 17th at 7 p.m.
