Men's Soccer Dominates Ave Maria to Remain Unbeaten

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 12, 2022) – The Webber International University men's soccer team played on its home field for the first time in almost a month as it hosted the Ave Maria University Gyrenes on Wednesday afternoon. The Warriors took a resounding 4-0 victory to extend their unbeaten run to eight matches.

It is the first time in 16 years the Warriors (7-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 SUN) have gone unbeaten in eight-straight matches. The last time being in 2006 when Webber had eight victories in a row and advanced to the semi-final of the NAIA National Tournament.

The Warriors were in control of the match from start to finish, obtaining the majority of possession and rattling off a season-high 40 shots compared to the 12 of Ave Maria (4-6-0, 0-4-0).

Webber opened the scoring just over 10 minutes into the match after an acrobatic diving header from Joseph O'Sullivan on a cross from Giovanni Galeb. O'Sullivan doubled his and the Warriors' goal tally just two minutes later as he got on the end of a corner kick at the back post and fired in a goal off of a Gyrene defender.

With less than 10 seconds remaining in the half, Ori Sela would float a pass over the back-line of the defense and Luke Piveral got to the ball just before the on-rushing goalie and flicked a chip shot into the back of the net to give the Warriors a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.

The offensive onslaught from Webber continued in the second half as well. In the 57th minute, the Warriors would switch the play over to Piveral in lots of space who then drove towards goal, cut past two defenders and rifled a shot past the keeper at the near post, extending the lead to 4-0.

The Warriors could have extended the lead even further if not for the Ave Maria goalkeeper that ended the match with a whopping 21 saves.

O'Sullivan and Piveral both finished the match with two goals apiece. Galeb, Marquez, and Sela all had an assist each. The two goals from O'Sullivan makes him the Warriors' leading goal-scorer so far this season with seven in eight matches played. Piveral scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season, making him the joint second-highest goal scorer alongside Jesus Sanchez.

The Warriors face their toughest test of the season so far up next as they travel to Miami Gardens, Florida to take on No. 6 St. Thomas University on Saturday, October 15th at 4 p.m.
