MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (January 13, 2022) - The Sun Conference Game of the Week saw the Webber International University women's basketball team match up against the second place team in the conference, Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens, Florida on Thursday night. The Warriors led from start to finish as they earned their fourth-straight victory and handed the Lions their first loss in conference play.
The Warriors (13-4 overall, 5-2 SUN) played outstanding defense, limiting Florida Memorial (8-5, 5-1) to 29.4 percent shooting from the field. Webber had offensive support from the bench as it outscored its opponent 41-16 in bench points while also outrebounding the Lions 56-43 in total for the game.
Webber came out of the gates very strong, outscoring Florida Memorial 20-7 in the first quarter. The Lions would begin to find their footing defensively in the second quarter, holding the Warriors to just 30 percent shooting in the quarter. With just over six minutes to go before halftime, Florida Memorial would go on a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to cut the lead to single digits at 28-19. The teams would trade baskets from then on, with the Warriors holding an 11-point lead at the break.
The Lions would try to chip away at the deficit throughout the second half, but Webber did enough to keep them at bay and see out the 14-point victory for the Warriors.
Freshman
Jaida Burgess led the Warriors in scoring with 16 points on the night, followed by
Samantha Pacheco and
Eletra Graham each with 14. Burgess also tallied a season-high seven assists as well as five rebounds.
Dasia Wandick finished with a game and season-high 11 rebounds, followed by
Rushell Jacob with seven and
Amaya Small with six. Defensively,
LeAndra Franklin grabbed three steals and
Triniti Lee had two blocks in total.
The victory over Florida Memorial inches the Warriors closer to taking over second place in The Sun Conference. Webber now has a one-day break before hosting the Bobcats of St. Thomas University on Saturday, January 15, at 2 p.m. inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
