Baseball eliminated from Sun Conference Tournament

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (May 7, 2021) – After being shutout 5-0 and held to only two hits against No. 4-seeded and No. 14 nationally-ranked Keiser University in its first game of The Sun Conference Tournament, the No. 3-seeded Webber International University baseball team then fell 7-3 and had only five hits against No. 6-seeded the University of South Carolina Beaufort to bring an end to its stay in the tournament.

In Webber's first game of the day against Keiser, the Seahawks' starting pitcher Pablo Arevalo (8-3) had a perfect game going through three innings and had a no-hitter going until with one in the bottom of the sixth inning on a single to center field by Cale Jones.

The Keiser offense, meanwhile, took a 1-0 lead with a two-out single in the top of the fourth inning, and then added another two-out hit in the top of the sixth inning to score two more runs and make it 3-0. Four of Keiser's five runs in the game came with two outs in the inning.

Webber's only other hit against Arrevalo was a leadoff single through the left side by Dominique Collie Jr. in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Warriors finished the contest with only three total baserunners and only got a runner into scoring position once in the game.

In the end, Arevalo pitched all nine innings allowing two hits, no runs, no walks and four strikeouts.

Webber's starter, Bryce McDonald (3-3), allowed four hits, four total runs, two earned runs, four walks and two strikeouts in 6.1 innings before Thomas Lopez Jr. pitched a hitless 1.2 innings and Praxie Vigil had a hitless top of the ninth.

In Webber's second game of the day against USCB, Norberto Navarro led off the top of the first inning with a single to center field, advanced to second on a groundout by Rougie Odor, took third base on a wild pitch and then scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Collie Jr.

Then in the top of the second inning, Luis Acevedo walked with one out, advanced to second on a groundout by Victor Florentino and then scored on a two-out single through the right side by Jacob Bluffstone to make it 2-1 Warriors.

However, USCB answered by putting up four runs on three hits in the bottom of the third inning, and then scored two runs on zero hits in the bottom of the fourth to take control of the game up 7-2.

Bluffstone would add his second two-out RBI-hit of the game with a single through the left side to score Angel Diaz in the top of the ninth, but ultimately the Warriors left seven runners on base in the game.

In addition to finishing with only seven hits between the two games, the Warriors committed a combined five errors defensively on the day.

Webber, which is now 28-24 overall, will now have to wait and see if it is selected to compete in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round for the fourth season in a row (excluding the shortened 2020 season).
