RENO, Nev. (May 19, 2021) – At this week's USBC Queens Tournament, two alumni of the Webber International University women's bowling program, Verity Crawley (England) and Diana Zavjalova (Latvia), both met up during the stepladder finals on Tuesday, May 18. It was the first major of the 2021 Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA) Tour season.
Crawley and Zavjalova, however, were not the only former Webber women's bowlers in action as they joined
Caitlyn Johnson (Beaumont, Texas), Taylor Bulthuis (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Daria Pajak (Poland) as other former Lady Warriors to make it to the winner's bracket.
Â
During three rounds of qualifying, Johnson (3,318 pins) was in seventh place, Bulthuis (3,220) was in 14th, Zavjalova (3,180) was in 22nd, Pajak (3,125) was tied for 32nd, and Crawley (3,096) was in 41st, joining a total of 64 ladies in the winner's bracket.
During bracket play, Pajak went 0-2 while Bulthuis went 1-2 and Johnson went 2-2. Crawley and Zavjalova both advanced to the semifinals of the winner's bracket after Crawley defeated the No. 1 seed.
Â
Crawley and Zavjalova then both advanced out of the elimination bracket as the final four athletes in the elimination bracket bowled a final three-game total-pinfall contest, with the top three scores advancing to the stepladder. Zavjalova advanced with a 683 set to face Crawley (598) in Tuesday's opening match.
Then, Tuesday's stepladder finals started with Crawley defeating Zavjalova 197-172 before Crawley fell 236-220 to the tournament runner-up.
In the end, Crawley finished in fourth place overall while Zavjalova was fifth.
It was the first championship-round appearance at a major for Crawley, who was competing for her first PWBA Championship, while Zavajolva was trying to become just the third player to win three Queens titles after doing so in 2013 and in 2017.
