Softball splits against Ave Maria during home finale

BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 28, 2021) – The nationally-recognized Webber International University softball team split its final two home games of the 2021 regular season against Sun Conference opponent Ave Maria University on Wednesday afternoon on Nancy Nichols Field, winning game one 6-1 on the 11th complete game performance of the season by Emma Maitland before falling 6-4 in game number two.

Maitland (11-8) pitched all seven innings allowing six hits, one run and one walk while the Webber offense finished with 11 hits in game one.

Alyssa Rodriguez was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, Cassidy Roberts was 2-for-3 with two runs scored as well, Kaitlin Cockcroft was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, and Kelsea Friend also had two RBI's.

Webber took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run hit with one out and the bases loaded by Friend, and then added runs in each of the next three innings as well.

In game two, Webber fell behind 3-1 after the first three innings and 6-1 after four innings before trying to mount a late comeback.

The Warriors left a runner on second base in the first inning after an RBI-double by Victoria Atkinson, left the bases loaded in the bottom of the second after three straight walks to start the inning, and left a runner on third in the bottom of the third.

In the bottom of the sixth, Webber tried to get back into it as Sabrina Hebding scored on a wild pitch and then with two outs, Cockcroft singled through the right side to score Alycia Celia and Blakeleigh Boyett and make the score 6-4 before the Warriors left yet another runner in scoring position.

Then in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Warriors loaded the bases with one out before a swinging strikeout and a groundout to the shortstop ended their comeback attempt.

In all, Webber left 10 runners on base in game two and had only five hits offensively.

Kayla Swinson (12-5) allowed three unearned runs in 2.2 innings, but Dariyen Moss finished off the final 3.2 innings allowing three hits, no runs and no walks. Moss has yet to give up a run in her last five appearances, a stretch spanning 10.1 innings.

With only two games left in the regular season, Webber's record moved to 27-21 overall and 14-8 in The Sun Conference while Ave Maria's improved to 20-20 and 8-16.

The Warriors will finish their 2021 regular season on the road at Thomas University at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 1.
