LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (April 10, 2021) – One day after splitting its first two games at No. 9 Georgia Gwinnett College and scoring 13 runs in the final three innings of game number two, the nationally-recognized Webber International University baseball team unfortunately fell 9-4 in game three to drop the series against the Grizzlies.
Webber (25-18 overall) scored twice in the top of the first inning as
Steven Lugo doubled down the left field line with two outs, leading to an RBI-single to right field by
Dominique Collie Jr. followed by an RBI-double to center field by
Bryan Eusebio.
Georgia Gwinnett (29-8) answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the first as an errant throw by the Warriors' pitcher on a pickoff play at second base allowed the runner to reach third base, which was followed by a sacrifice fly to center field to score the go-ahead run for the Grizzlies.
Then after a solo home run by the Grizzlies in the bottom of the second inning, the Warriors got it back to a one-run game at 4-3 in the top of the third inning as Lugo scored on an RBI-hit by Collie Jr. for the second time in the game, this time an RBI-double to right field with only one out.
Unfortunately, Collie Jr. was left at second base, and then the Warriors were set down 1-2-3 in each of the next three innings.
Lugo and Collie Jr. both finished 2-for-4.
Bryce McDonald pitched 6.2 innings to start the game, allowing nine hits, five total runs and three earned runs. McDonald did his job to give Webber a fighting chance, but the Warriors were held to only two hits after the third inning.
"We did a lot of things well throughout the series, but we missed out on some opportunities that gave us a chance to win the series," spoke Coach
Matt Saliba. "It was a good test for us, and now we have to get ready for a big conference series against St. Thomas next weekend."
Next up, Webber will return to Sun Conference action on the road at No. 14 St. Thomas University. The Warriors and the Bobcats will play first at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 16, followed by a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 17. It will also be Webber's final conference series on the road in 2021.
