LAKELAND, Fla. (March 19, 2021) – The No. 25 Webber International University baseball team finished off its final two games of The Sun Conference Series of the Week against No. 2 Southeastern University by splitting a doubleheader on Saturday. The Warriors won game one 5-3 after scoring two runs in the top of the ninth inning, but then they lost the final game of the series by a score of 5-2.
Down 3-0 after four innings in game one, Webber tied it at 3-3 in the fifth inning thanks to a three-run home run to left field by
Cale Jones scoring
Luis Acevedo and
Bryan Eusebio.
Then in the top of the ninth inning, Eusebio singled up the middle with one out, Jones singled to the shortstop to put two runners on base, and then
Norberto Navarro smacked a double down the left field line to put the Warriors on top.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Fire got a one-out walk, but would get nothing more as
Rey Rodriguez (3-1) earned the win by not allowing a single hit and striking out four over the final two innings.
Bryce McDonald started the game and did a great job himself, allowing six hits and three runs while not walking any batters and striking out eight over the first seven innings of the contest.
Jones finished 3-for-3 in game one, with the big blast being his first career home run in two seasons as a Warrior.
It was the first home loss this season for the Fire, and was only their second loss all year long so far.
In game two, Webber fell behind 4-0 after four innings and was haunted by leaving 11 runners on base.
The Warriors' first run of the game came via a two-out single to right field by Acevedo scoring
Rougie Odor in the top of the sixth inning, then in the top of the eighth inning, Eusebio singled with one out to score
Angel Diaz.
Acevedo and Eusebio both had two hits in game.
Webber is now 18-12 overall and 8-4 in The Sun Conference on the season while Southeastern moved to 26-2 and 7-2.
Next up, the Warriors will return home to the Heart of Florida Field for a nonconference doubleheader against Florida National University starting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24. That following weekend, Webber will return to conference action against Florida Memorial University on Friday, March 26, and Saturday, March 27.
