Softball splits nonconference doubleheader with CCSJ

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 11, 2021) – One day after dropping its first two Sun Conference games of the 2021 season at Southeastern University, the Webber International University softball team returned home but split its nonconference matchup against Calumet College of St. Joseph, winning game one 4-1 before losing 4-2 in game two.

In game one, Webber put up four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Alyssa Rodriguez led off with a single to left field, Victoria Atkinson doubled to center field and Morgan Mills walked to load the bases.

Haley Saylor walked to score Rodriguez and tie the game at 1-1, and then with one out, Sabrina Hebding scored Atkinson on a sacrifice fly to right field.

After a walk by Jenna Chaudoin, pinch runner Miranda Muriel stole home on heads-up base running with the pitcher not paying attention and the catcher not covering home plate.

Lastly, the Warriors pushed across an unearned run as Saylor and Chaudoin pulled off a double steal, leading to an errant throw by the catcher allowing Saylor to score to make it 4-1.

Webber had only four hits in game one and had four errors as a team, but Chaudoin (3-2) did her job by limiting CCSJ to only two hits, one total run and zero earned runs through all seven innings to earn what was the second complete game of her freshman campaign so far.

In game two, the Warriors fell behind 3-0 after a three-run top of the third inning for CCSJ featuring a two-run home run to left field and an RBI-double to right field.

Then in the top of the seventh, the Crimson Wave made it 4-0 as they scored on a wild pitch.

In the bottom half of the seventh, Webber finally scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Rhiannon Swan with no outs to score Rodriguez, and then with one out, Saylor grounded out to score Taylor Bias.

Webber finished with only three hits in game number two.

Webber is now 13-13 on the season while CCSJ picked up its first win of the year at 1-13. It was the 11th loss in 16 games for the Warriors since seeping No. 12 William Carey University back on February 17. Additionally, the loss for the Warriors against the Crimson Wave was only Webber's second loss to CCSJ in 12 meetings between the two teams.

Next up, Webber will return to conference action against Thomas University, playing a doubleheader at home starting at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17.
