No. 25 softball swept for first time this season

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 20, 2021) – In what was the Warriors' final doubleheader of six straight doubleheaders at home to open up their 2021 season, the No. 25 nationally-ranked Webber International University softball team was swept for the first time this season. Against Freed-Hardeman University, Webber fell 8-6 in game one and then lost 6-1 in game two.

Webber (8-4 overall) led 6-1 after the first three innings of game one before a combined seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings for Freed-Hardeman (6-2) put the Lions over the top. FHU got a two-out, two-RBI double in the top of the fifth, and had a three-run homer followed by another two-out, two-RBI hit in the top of the sixth.

Mary-Margaret Maggard was 2-for-4 with a triple and two stolen bases, including a steal of home in the first inning, and Alyssa Rodriguez continued her hot start at the plate with a one-out double to left in the bottom of the seventh while also stealing two bases. Krista Hoyt added a triple to right field to lead off the bottom of the second inning.

In game two, another two-run double for the Lions in the top of the sixth followed by a run-scoring single broke open the score from a 2-1 game to a 5-1 game, and then a solo homer in the top of the seventh made it 6-1. However, the story of the game was the Warriors being no hit by the Lions' starting pitcher and striking out 12 times.

Next up for Webber will be The Spring Games at the Fortune Road Athletic Complex in Kissimmee, Florida, as the Warriors take on both Spring Arbor University (Mich.) and Point Park University (Pa.) on Saturday, February 27.
