Men’s soccer falls 2-1 to FMU in final Spring game

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 18, 2021) – In what was the Warriors' last of two Spring games this season, the Webber International University men's soccer team fell for the second time by one goal this Spring, losing this time by a score of 2-1 at home against Florida Memorial University on the Warrior Grass Field.

Webber led 1-0 in the first half on a goal in the 27th minute by David Negrin Ruiz off the through ball from Rodrigo Flores Iraheta.

The Warriors, however, were unable to pull away after both teams finished the first half with eight shots, and then in the second half, FMU scored twice to pull out the victory.

Webber had a chance to go up 2-0 just over 10 minutes into the second half when back-to-back corner kicks by Daniel Gamaonov led to headers by Jacob Silva and Jay Skelcher-Maxwell that both went wide.

After FMU's first goal of the match in the 77th minute, Webber's best opportunity to retake the lead came on a run down the line by Negrin Ruiz, who fired a shot that was narrowly saved in the 80th minute.

Then in the 86th minute, Prince James had his shot blocked, and less than 30 seconds later, FMU took the lead with its second goal in a less-than 10-minute span, leaving the Warriors only three and a half minutes left.

In the end, Skelcher-Maxwell led Webber with four total shots while Negrin Ruiz fired two shots on goal and James had two total shots.

"I am proud of how the boys played today," spoke Webber's Head Coach Neil Cockburn. "We played a lot of our JV players, and a lot of them performed well. We will be ready to do better against Florida Memorial next year."

With two losses this Spring, the Webber men's soccer team finished its 2020-21 season 6-10 overall.
