Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s basketball comes up short on Senior Night after last-second shot by Coastal Georgia

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 18, 2021) – In what was the final game of the 2020-21 campaign for the Webber International University men's basketball team, senior Jaylon Myles scored a game-high 20 points while fellow-senior Rasheem Etienne added 11 points, but it would not be enough as the Warriors suffered a heartbreaking 61-60 defeat during their Senior Night against the College of Coastal Georgia. In addition to No. 10 Myles and No. 21 Etienne, it was also the final game as a Warrior for No. 12 Nasir Stewart-Muir and No. 22 Herman Robinson.

Myles scored his 20 points on 3-for-5 shooting from 3-point range while in addition to him and Etienne, the two other Warriors in double figures in scoring in this one were junior Justin Boyd and sophomore Marcus Massey, both with 10 points on 2-for-3 shooting from three. Myles also finished with a new career-high six steals while Etienne also added four assists to his Senior Night stat line.

Junior Loro Natana added six points while fellow-junior Eddie Davis led the Warriors in rebounding with seven.

In all, the game featured 11 lead changes and 10 ties, and neither team led by more than six points until the Mariners went up by eight at 38-30 with 13 minutes left to play.

From there, Coastal Georgia expanded its lead to 12 points at 49-37 with nine minutes left to play before Webber answered back with a 15-2 run to take a 52-51 lead on a jumper by Etienne with 5:13 left.

The lead then changed six more times over the next two and a half minutes before the two teams found themselves tied at 59-59 with only 1:27 on the clock.

With 1:12 remaining, Myles went 1-for-2 from the free throw line to put Webber ahead by one at 60-59.

Then after three misses on the offensive end for Coastal Georgia over the next 48 seconds, the Mariners sent the Warriors to the free throw line with 19 seconds on the clock and a chance to go up by three.

Unfortunately, two misses from the stripe by Webber led to the Mariners trying to win the game on their end of the floor, and after a pair of misses and offensive rebounds by the visiting team led to the final timeout of the game with only two seconds left, Coastal Georgia drew up a great inbounds play from its own baseline and won the game on a jumper from the paint banked in with only 0.4 seconds to go.

Webber finished its 2020-21 regular season, which was also its first year under its new head coach Gabriel Rutledge, with an overall record of 9-21 and a Sun Conference mark of 5-15. Coastal Georgia, meanwhile, improved to 12-10 overall and 10-9 in the conference with one more game remaining in its regular season.

10 of Webber's defeats in conference play this year came by 10 points or less. With the loss, however, their seventh straight to finish off the regular season, the Warriors are officially eliminated from postseason contention.

Coach Rutledge said after the game, "It was a disappointing finish to our season. I thought our guys did everything they could to win tonight, but a few shots didn't fall. I'm proud of how hard the guys fought throughout the game and the season. This year has been tough, but I'm excited for the future of our program. We had many single possession games not go our way, but we will learn and grow from it. Lastly, I would like to thank our seniors who have done so much for our program. Go Warriors."
