Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s basketball falls at Coastal Georgia for second time this season

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (February 15, 2021) – The final road game of the 2020-21 regular season for the Webber International University women's basketball team resulted in a 68-54 loss for the Warriors after a very difficult first half offensively at the College of Coastal Georgia on Monday evening.

It was the second loss this season for Webber (16-8 overall, 12-7 The Sun Conference) at Coastal Georgia (11-10, 9-9), accounting for half of the Warriors' four losses on the road this season. It was also the Warriors' sixth straight loss against the Mariners over the last three seasons.

Webber started the game trailing 7-0 and was 0-for-6 from the field until its first field goal, a 3-pointer by Eletra Graham three and a half minutes into the game.

The Warriors then trailed 11-3 a little bit over the halfway point of the first quarter and were 1-for-12 from the field overall during the first six minutes of the game.

It was then an 11-point deficit for Webber at 14-3 with three minutes left in the first quarter.

Webber finished the first quarter making only 2 of its 18 field goal attempts (11.1 percent) and trailed by 13 points at 18-5.

The second quarter was not much better as the Warriors allowed Coastal Georgia to shoot 53.3 percent (8-15) from the field in the period and fell behind by as much as 24 at 39-15 with less than a minute left before the break.

In all for the first half, Webber shot only 7-for-32 (21.9 percent) from the field and was 2-for-10 from three.

In the second half, Webber attempted to turn things around as the Warriors opened the third quarter on a 12-4 run to get within 15 at 45-30 on a jumper by Dasia Wandick with four and a half minutes left in the period. However, the Mariners responded with an 11-2 run to go back up by 24 at 56-32 with less than a minute left in the quarter.

Then in the final quarter, the Warriors scored 13 straight to start the period and get within 10 at 56-46 with 5:37 left to play. That run for Webber started with a 3-pointer by Selena Rodriguez, followed by a layup by Amaya Small, an and-one by LeAndra Franklin, a 3-pointer by Graham, and then finally another layup by Small. Webber was 5-for-8 (62.5 percent) from the field to that point in the period while Coastal Georgia was 0-for-11.

That would, however, be the closest Webber would get as a 10-4 run for the Mariners over the next four and a half minutes sealed the Warriors' fate.

The Warriors did outscore the Mariners 21-12 in the fourth quarter while shooting 53.3 percent (8-15) from the field and limiting Coastal Georgia to only 17.6 percent (3-17) shooting in the period, but it would simply be too little too late.

Webber was led by Small, who recorded 10 points and 12 rebounds and had her sixth double-double of the season.

Graham and Paulette Burke both added eight points, which was a new career-high for Burke, and Franklin and Wandick both finished with seven points while Wandick also had six rebounds.

With only one game remaining in the regular season for the Warriors, next up will be Webber's Senior Day at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, against this same College of Coastal Georgia squad.
