Football unable to keep up with undefeated St. Thomas

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 12, 2021) – The Webber International University football team battled closely with the undefeated Bobcats of St. Thomas University through three quarters, but ultimately fell short in a 27-7 defeat on Saturday afternoon on the Warrior Grass Field.

The Bobcats (6-0 overall, 3-0 SUN) are receiving votes in the most recent NAIA polls. It is the third time this season that the Warriors (0-5, 0-2) have faced opposition that are receiving national attention.

St. Thomas would score a touchdown on their second offensive drive of the game as well as a field goal to end the first quarter with a 10-0 lead.

Sophomore Tyrese Sanders would force a fumble that would be recovered by Tyron Washington to end the Bobcats first offensive drive of the second quarter, giving the Warriors good field position at the St. Thomas 35-yard line. Following rushes of eight and 11 yards from quarterback Cody Braden, the Warriors would find themselves with a 4th-and-goal at the one-yard line. A quarterback sneak from Braden would put Webber on the board and following an extra-point conversion from Austin Smith, it would be a one score game at 10-7.

The Warriors would battle and remain in touching distance heading into the fourth quarter. However, the Bobcats would score a field goal and two more touchdowns in the final quarter to pull away from the Warriors and earn the victory, 27-7.

Braden would finish the game on 13-26 passing with 119 yards through the air and a rushing touchdown to his credit. Tremon Bright would lead the Warriors with 85 yards on the ground. Meanwhile, Frederick Curry Jr. would lead the team in receiving yards with 37 followed by Julian Cervantes with 28.

Defensively, the Warriors were led by Devonte Harris with nine total tackles. Joseph Burton would finish with seven total tackles including one for loss and a pass breakup.  They were followed by Sanders with six tackles including one for loss and Jaren Muse and James Moore each with five.

The Warriors hit the road for their next game as they travel to Ave Maria, Florida to take on the Gyrenes on Saturday, October 16 at 7 p.m.
