MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (January 30, 2021) – In what was dubbed as The Sun Conference Women's Basketball Game of the Week, the Webber International University women's basketball team fell for the third time this season against St. Thomas University, losing this time by 10 points at 68-58 to snap the Warriors' four-game winning streak.
It was a slow start for the Warriors, who trailed 21-13 after the first quarter and then found themselves behind 37-21 at halftime after only scoring eight points in the second quarter. Webber was also 0-for-7 from three in the first half while St. Thomas was 4-for-8.
"We started off too slow to recover," said Head Coach
Grady Morrell. "You just can't start like that on the road and expect to win."
In the third quarter, Webber outscored St. Thomas 20-12 after shooting 47.06 percent (8-17), but in the fourth quarter, the Warriors went 0-for-4 from three while allowing the Bobcats to shoot 66.67 percent (8-12) in the period.
In the end, Webber finished shooting only 34.4 percent (22-64) from the field, only 7.1 percent (1-14) from 3-point range, and was only 56.5 percent (13-23) from the free throw line. It was the third lowest field goal percentage of the season for the Warriors, and was their lowest 3-point field goal percentage of the year as well.
Additionally, Webber's 28 rebounds tied for its second lowest total of the season, and its nine assists were also its lowest so far.
Paris Copeland led Webber with 16 points on 7-for-14 shooting from the field,
Amaya Small had 13 points and a team-high six rebounds, and
Dasia Wandick added 10 points.
Webber (13-5 overall, 9-4 The Sun Conference) suffered what was only its second road loss of the season (8-2 on the road), and now trails St. Thomas (12-3, 9-3) by half a game in the conference standings. Both teams have already clinched a spot in the conference tournament.
Next up, the final month of the regular season will kick off as the Warriors go for the three-game sweep against Thomas University. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 2, inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
