Women’s volleyball drops seconds straight conference road match

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (September 30, 2020) – The Webber International University women's volleyball team traveled to play outside of the state of Florida for the first and only time this season, and despite leading 2-0, the Warriors fell to the College of Coastal Georgia 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-19, 15-12) on Wednesday night inside Howard Coffin Gym.

It was the second straight Sun Conference loss on the road for Webber (4-4 overall, 2-3 The Sun Conference) and was the second time in nine days the Warriors have lost after holding a 2-0 lead. Coastal Georgia, meanwhile, earned its second 3-2 victory in a row after trailing two sets to none and improved to 4-2 both overall and in the conference with all of its matches so far this season being TSC matches.

In the deciding fifth set, Webber took its first lead of the set at 4-3 on a kill Madelyn Glouner but then trailed 10-5. A Mariner service error followed by an ace by Nayelis Alvarado and a kill by Nora Burgos-Heredia then made it 10-8, but then the two teams traded the next nine points, eight of which were kills, until Coastal Georgia found itself a winner at 15-12.

In the third set, Webber trailed 6-0 and 9-2 before battling back to within one at 10-9. CCG then went back ahead by seven at 21-14. In the fourth set, the Warriors again trailed by seven at 12-5 and then trailed by nine at 17-8

The first set was brutally close with Webber winning it on a kill by Burgos-Heredia; and then the second set was still close until three straight points by the Warriors, the last of which came via a kill by Glouner, gave Webber a four-point lead up 22-18. Back-to-back kills by Amanda Vega and Glouner then made it 24-19 Warriors in the second set.

As a team, Webber hit .333 percent and .250 percent in the first and second sets, respectively, before hitting only .061 percent in the third and below .200 percent in each of the final two sets.

The star of the match for the Warriors was Vega with a career-high in both assists (42) and digs (22), which was also good for her second double-double so far this season.

Burgos-Heredia led the Warriors in kills with 14 and a .467 attack percentage, Glouner was next with 11 kills, and Sara Weisrock and Alvardo both added eight kills.

Behind Vega in digs was the two-time reigning Sun Conference Defender of the Week Kiersten Tisdale with 15 while Svenja Koenig finished with eight digs and Abbey Darress, Gabriela Lopez and Alvardo each added seven.

At the net, Koenig finished with four blocks while Glouner added three.

Webber's Head Women's Volleyball Coach Gretchen Hand said, "It was a great match by both teams, and we look forward to having our starting right side hitter Kelsey McKinley back soon. This season has been full of ups, downs, twists and turns. Thanks goodness we are Warriors. It's going to take fight because this conference is evenly matched from top to bottom."

Webber will now return home to the friendly confines of the Sabbagh Athletic Center to host the second-place team in The Sun Conference, Ave Maria University, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 3. The Warriors' only two losses ever against the Gyrenes came last season as Webber now holds a 21-2 all-time lead in the series.
