No. 16 Warriors fall to No. 7 Bruins after giving up deciding grand slam

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 2, 2020) – The No. 16 Webber International University baseball team led 2-1 after two innings and seemed to be getting a strong starting pitcher performance out of Hunter Morales until the fifth inning, were a five-run inning including a grand slam cost the Warriors in a 7-3 defeat at home against No. 7 Bellevue University.

Webber took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Norberto Navarro walked with two outs to score Matthew Wiseman, and Morales (2-1) recorded three straight 1-2-3 innings in the top of the second, third and fourth innings.

However, the top of the fifth is where Bellevue broke out the bats with five runs on five hits, including a one-out grand slam to right center to break a 2-2 tie.

Relief pitcher Dalton Mosser did now allow a single hit or walk over the next 1.2 innings while striking out three batters, and then Casey Lawson pitched another 1.2 innings give up only one hit and zero walks.

The Warriors' offense, however, left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, went down 1-2-3 in the sixth and seventh innings, and then left a runner on second base with only one out in the eighth with back-to-back strikeouts.

In the bottom of the ninth, back-to-back singles by Rougie Odor and Nolan Soliveres started things off before a one-out walk by Carlo Mancillas again loaded the bases. Unfortunately, Webber was again unable to cash in with a big inning as Odor scored with two outs on a wild pitch before a hard, line drive fly out to center field left the potential tying run in the on deck circle.

Webber fell to 12-9 overall with what was its third straight loss and sixth loss in seven games while Bellevue won its fourth game in a row, all in Florida, to get to .500 overall on the season at 7-7.

Next up for Webber baseball will be a doubleheader tomorrow on Tuesday, March 3, against Cleary University. The games are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field.
