Men’s volleyball splits two matches at Campbellsville

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. (March 14, 2020) – On Friday, March 13, at Campbellsville University, the Webber International University men's volleyball team came from behind two sets to zero to defeat Cumberland University 3-2 (19-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-16, 15-8) before falling 3-0 (25-18, 25-10, 25-22) against the No. 2-ranked team in the NAIA, Campbellsville.

In the comeback win over Cumberland, Webber hit .444 percent in the fourth set and .312 percent in the final set while holding the Phoenix to exactly .000 percent hitting in those same two sets.

Already down to sets to zero, Webber found itself behind by scores of 8-3, 13-7, 14-8, 17-13 and 20-18 in the third set against Cumberland before coming back to tie it at 20-20 on back-to-back kills by Kyle Robertson and Bryant Herrera. The Warriors then trailed 22-21 before a kill by Daniel Hermida followed by three straight errors by the Phoenix got Webber on the board.

From there, all of the momentum was in the Warriors' favor as Webber proceeded to lead by scores of 6-0, 8-1, 10-2, 13-3, 16-6, 17-8, 21-12 and 24-13 to cruise to victory in set number four; and then in the fifth set Webber jumped out to leads of 7-1, 8-3, 10-5 and 13-6.

Three Warriors reached double digits in kills against Cumberland as Hermida had a match-high 15 kills, followed by Orlando Fletcher with 13 and Justin Beecher with 10. Beecher and Fletcher put together attack percentages of .381 and .320 respectively, while Herrera added nine kills with a .353 attack percentage and Robertson had four kills with no attack errors and an attack percentage of .667.

Hermida also added a career-high 11 digs for his second double-double in a span of three matches.

Beecher also added four blocks while Herrera had five blocks, and in addition to Hermida's digs, Christian Alvarez-Rivero led the team with a season-high 12 digs while Tim Rouch Jr. added seven. Rouch Jr. also dished out 23 assists while Robertson had 14.

Against Campbellsville, Webber hit -.143 percent in the second set and -.059 percent in the third while the Tigers hit .480 percent in the first set and .438 percent in the second. Webber finished the match at -.051 percent while Campbellsville hit .364 percent overall.

Hermida and Fletcher recorded seven and five kills, respectively, against the Tigers while Rouch Jr. and Roberston both dished out six assists and Kenneth Alicea had a career-high three blocks.

Webber men's volleyball is now 9-6 overall and 6-3 in the Mid-South Conference, good for fourth place in the league standings, while Cumberland fell to 11-14 and 4-5 and No. 2 Campbellsville improved to 23-2 and 9-0.
