BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 11, 2020) – Despite falling behind 3-0 after the top of the first inning, the Webber International University baseball team stayed with it and battled back to beat Lawrence Tech 6-4 on Wednesday on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field.
The Warriors first got on the board in the bottom of the first inning as
Rougie Odor singled with one out and then scored with two outs on a double to right center by
Bryan Eusebio.
Webber then took a slim-one run lead with a three-run bottom of the sixth on another RBI-double, this time by
Carlo Mancillas, followed by back-to-back sacrifice flies to right field by Eusebio and
Victor Florentino.
Already with two RBI's under his belt, Eusebio came up big again in the bottom of the eighth by hitting a two-run homer to left field to make the score 6-3. Those two extra runs for the Warriors turned out to be very important as Lawrence Tech scored in the top of the ninth off of winning pitcher
Praxie Vigil (2-0).
After very effective relief efforts by
Sean Whalen (2.2 innings pitched, 3 hits, 0 runs) and
Dalton Mosser (2.0 innings, 3 hits, 0 runs), Vigil pitched 3.2 innings allowing four hits, one run and zero walks while striking out three to earn the win.
Gerig Blackman came on to get the final out and earn his eighth save of the season.
In addition to Eusesbio finishing 2-for-3 with four RBI's, a double and his third home run of the season, Odor and Mancillas were both 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
It was the fifth win in a row for Webber, which improved to 18-11 overall on the season while Lawrence Tech fell to 9-5.
Next up for Webber baseball will be the third meeting this season between Webber and the University of St. Francis (Ill.), which is set for 4 p.m. on Friday, March 13. Earlier this week on Sunday, March 8, the Warriors defeated the Fighting Saints by scores of 9-8 and 10-2 to start their current winning streak.
