No. 16 baseball beats Thomas by one to open series

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 28, 2020) – The No. 16 Webber International University baseball team got back into the win column with a narrow 4-3 victory over Thomas University during Sun Conference action on Friday night on the Heart of Florida Baseball Field.

Webber (12-6 overall, 4-3 The Sun Conference) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning followed by another run by Orlando Pena on a two-out triple to center field by Bryan Eusebio in the bottom of the third to lead it 2-0.

Then, after Thomas (7-13, 0-4) came back to tie it one half inning later in the top of the fourth, the Warriors answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning as Carlo Mancillas led off with a double to left field and was followed by a bunt single from Victor Florentino before both players came around to score on a second RBI-hit from Eusebio to double up the score at 4-2.

Mancillas finished 2-for-3 while Eusebio was 2-for-4.

Austin Dreher earned the win to improve to 4-1 on the season. Dreher surrendered five hits, six walks, three total runs and two earned runs while striking out six in 6.1 innings before Hunter Morales did not allow a single batter to reach for the next 1.2 innings.

Gerig Blackman then finished off the final inning with a hit and a walk against him, but it was good enough for him to earn his sixth save of the season. Blackman began the day ranked second in all of the NAIA with five saves.

Webber and Thomas will return to the field tomorrow on Saturday, February 29, for two games starting at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
