Women’s basketball finishes off season sweep against second-place JWU; moves into fourth place in TSC

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 1, 2020) – The streaking Webber International University women's basketball team kicked off the final month of the regular season with an 89-70 statement win over the second-place team in The Sun Conference and a team receiving votes in the latest NAIA Division-II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, Johnson & Wales University, on Saturday inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

For Webber (14-9 overall, 8-5 The Sun Conference), it was the Warriors' fourth win in a row and seventh Sun Conference victory over its last eight games. Meanwhile, two of the three Sun Conference losses for Johnson & Wales (15-5, 9-3) so far this season have come at the hands of the Warriors as Webber pulled off the season sweep of the Wildcats for the second year in a row and the fifth time in six seasons.

The Warriors' win on Saturday, combined with Ave Maria University's (14-9, 7-6) 81-73 loss at St. Thomas University, moved Webber into sole possession of fourth place in the TSC Women's Basketball standings.

Head Coach Grady Morrell said, "We keep getting better in different parts of our game. Now it's time to start putting it all together and polishing the tools."

Six different Warriors reached double figures in scoring as Eletra Graham finished with a game-high 18 points, all in the first half, on 6-for-7 shooting from 3-point range. The 18 points were a new season-high for the junior from Leesburg, Florida, while her six 3-pointers made were a new career-high.

Next in scoring for the Warriors was junior Paris Copeland with 14 points while she also added five rebounds and four assists.

Sophomore Taniya Patrick finished with 13 points, five rebounds and five blocks, and Emmarrie Carmen also reached 13 points while adding seven boards.

Two other Warriors with impressive stat lines were the point guards LeAndra Franklin and Breyonna Reed. Franklin finished with 11 points, six assists and four rebounds while Reed had 10 points, six assists and six boards.

The Warriors outscored the Wildcats 49-28 during the second half while holding the Wildcats to 33.33 percent shooting and zero 3-pointers in both the third and fourth quarters.

Webber meanwhile, shot over 61 percent from the field during both the third and fourth quarters to run away with its first win over a nationally-recognized opponent so far this season.

The game was the definition of a back-and-forth battle as there were 16 ties and 14 lead changes throughout the contest.

One of the biggest differences in the game was that of free throws as the Warriors shot 73.7 percent (14-19) from the line for the game while JWU shot only 40 percent (14-35), including a percentage of only 26.67 percent (4-14) in the fourth quarter.

Neither team led by more than four points in the game until the end of the third quarter when two free throws by Reed followed by a layup by Dysheka Price put Webber up by six at 62-56 heading into the final quarter.

Webber then opened up the final quarter with a layup by Copeland and a 3-pointer by Franklin to jump ahead by nine at 67-58, and then an and-one by Reed made it a 12-point game at 72-60 with seven minutes left to play. The Wildcats never got back to within single digits the rest of the way.

Next up, Webber will travel to Ave Maria University to play the Gyrenes for the second time this season at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 6, as the Warriors will look to make it five TSC wins in a row.
