Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men’s volleyball improves to 3-0 with win at NCAA Division-II Erskine

DUE WEST, S.C. (February 1, 2020) – The first road match of the 2020 season for the Webber International University men's volleyball team resulted in a 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-20, 30-28) win for the Warriors as this time, Webber defeated NCAA Division-II Erskine College.

It was the third straight 3-1 win to start the season for Webber (3-0 overall) and was the second match in a row the Warriors had to come back after dropping the opening set to win the match.

"This was an important game for us to establish the team's dynamics on the road and I am proud of how the guys responded," spoke new Head Men's Volleyball Coach Carlos Jimenez. "Our liberos had an outstanding game helping to organize the serve-receive response, and the entire front line did an excellent job of implementing the blocking tactics that we have been working on. We want to keep the momentum going as we play our conference match against St Andrews and try to get the most out this road trip."

After giving up the final three points to Erskine (2-6) to break a 22-22 tie in set number one, the Warriors bounced back to win set number two on a kill by Justin Beecher before closing out the third set on a 4-1 run and finishing it off with an assisted block by Beecher and Orlando Fletcher.

In a wild fourth and final set, Webber reached match-point six times before finally winning it on back-to-back kills by Bryant Herrera and Daniel Hermida.

Webber hit a very strong .363 percent for the match while hitting over .420 percent in both the second and third sets and hitting .324 percent in the final set.

Playing against one of his former schools, Hermida put up an extremely impressive 23 kills. It was his second match already on the season recording 20 or more kills.

Other Warriors with double digits in kills were Fletcher with 11 and Zachary Ayala with 10. Hermida, Fletcher and Ayala somehow all finished with an exact same .421 attack percentage as well.

Additionally, Kyle Robertson had one of his best matches since the middle of last season as he finished with a strong 37 assists on the night. It was his most assists in a single match since February 15 of last season.

The Warriors now face a quick turnaround for the next match tomorrow at St. Andrews University, which is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 2, in Laurinburg, North Carolina. It will also be the start of Mid-South Conference play for Webber as the Warriors look to win their MSC opener for the second season in a row.
